This classic circuit hike, about 8 miles long with an estimated 2500 feet of elevation gain, includes one of the steepest trails in Shenandoah National Park and one of the most scenic views. We will enter from just inside the Park boundary at the base of the Blue Ridge, immediately cross two streams, ascend the very steep Buck Ridge Trail to Skyline Drive, and eventually make our way to Marys Rock on the crest of the mountain. Here we'll lunch while inhaling one of the most sweeping vistas in the entire Park. After lunch we'll retrace our steps as far as Skyline Drive, then return to our cars via the beautiful (and not-so-steep) Buck Hollow Trail.
Bring lunch, beverages, sturdy hiking boots, layered clothing and about $15 for transportation and trip fees. We will be making a pitstop at the Sheetz in Warrenton for those who wish to pick up a made-to-order sandwich for lunch. Meet at the East Falls Church Metro station at 9:30 a.m. in the small Kiss & Ride lot at North Sycamore and 19th Street, to your right as you exit the station.
