Length: 8.5 miles
Elevation Gain: 1750 feet
This moderate 8.5-mile, out-and-back hike near Thornton Gap in Shenandoah National Park, with an estimated 1750 feet of elevation gain, is mostly a walk in the woods but does feature expansive views of the Massanutten Ridge from Double Bear Rocks, which is both the destination and the single viewpoint along the trail. We will enter from the base of the Blue Ridge, well below Skyline Drive, and begin a steady but gentle climb along a trail that is mostly packed dirt rather than rocky. Despite the elevation gain, this hike is easy on the feet.
Bring lunch, beverages, sturdy hiking boots and about $16 for transportation and trip fees. We will be making a pitstop at the Sheetz in Warrenton for those who wish to pick up a made-to-order sandwich.
Meet at the East Falls Church Metro station at 8:30 a.m. We'll gather in the small Kiss & Ride lot at North Sycamore and 19th Street, to your right as you exit the station.
