    Noob looking for resources:

I loved the event last weekend and am starting to look into building my own machine but am having a hard time finding a website with all the little details a noob needs to know in one place. Any thoughts?

Looking for definitions of the parts, how they work, what makes one better than another, etc. it seems like there are hundreds of FPs, ESCs, TXs, etc. to choose from and I don't know where to start!

I got a couple of X4s to play with in the meantime...

    Thanks!

I also figured I should give arducopter a shout out as well. 3dr is based here in California and they have offices in Berkeley. Their autopilot is one of the best and it is open source. I believe they will be adding support for RTK GPS is the near future and this represents the potential for centimeter level autonomous tracking. They are out personally flying and testing most Friday afternoons at the Berkeley marina. Great local technology to support.

Thanks Nate! I was checking out 3dr and their "iris" be cool to see it in action in B-Town.

Great night everyone! Elias here is a suggestion for a different fighting format next time. I made it to the final round but only had two fights. Instead of single elimination, why don't we try a round robin format. This way every pilot gets to fight every other pilot at least once. Then you total up the points each fighter was able to hold onto and can determine a final round with two or more pilots as appropriate. More flying time for each pilot is a good thing at this point.

There should be a hoop mounted up on the wall, if you make it through the hoop you get a point back. Maybe two hoops if that's too easy.

      2 · February 3, 2014

    • Elias D.

I posted a reply to your comment in the wrong thread Dav. The reporter quote one. Basically yes we are planning on hoops, obstacles and a score board plus more. Thinking next meet up will be a round table to vote some rules and infrastructure up or down, talk some tech and other things that will evolve this fight club into a great sport. Will announce a date soonish.

    Hey all,
a journalist friend who is working on a story for Enganadget would like a quote or two from everyone regarding our fun and games. Here are the questions that have been passed on to ask, thanks in advance!!

    - What's the advantage to being part of this group?
    Or
    - why make the trip to SF when all you really need is an
    open field?

That assumes an either/or proposition. I do both. It's a community collective intelligence. Learning from the mistakes and successes of another while enjoying the company of like-minded people enthusiastic about the craft. That question is like asking why knitting circles exist. They have for centuries but no one asks why they would knit together when they can do it apart. It's human nature to be social. Better question: Why do we spend hundreds or thousands of dollars to see it torn apart in a blaze of glory, only to rebuild it and do it again?

We were talking about hoops and obstacles for sure. Think the next meet up will be a Fight Club think tank to vote ideas and rules up or down, establish some game infrastructure and talk some tech. Will post details soon.

Anyone adverse to me bringing a 3D printed hex for the next battle? I know the fights are more about pilot skill than weight class but it looked to be that I was the only one with a hex at the last meetup and I would really like to fight with something bigger.

My Son and I are now officially hooked-on-quads thanks to you guys! And next time have a donation cup for the pizza! I’ll chip in for sure!
    For the journalist friend:

For me, I see commercial and enterprising uses of drones for entertainment ( can we say Drone Olympics?) , business (can we say Drone Olympics?). For my 12 year old son, a tactile use of tech (not just minecraft shit) to destroy the opponent and learn the physical world around him.
Drones make people nervous, and there are politicians and the FAA currently drafting regulation and policy for the use of drones personally and commercially. I see career potential while others see a threat and this group of individuals that actively use drones, daily, and for pleasure can influence and remove fears and maybe guide policy of the use of drones in our inevitable future ( Tacos by drones! Amazon orders by drones!)Did I mention Drone Olympics?

Since that post, had our drone eaten by a jumping labrador at the park. Fixed and back in form—$160 in replacement parts later. So no need to be gentle with us anymore. We've had our first accident, so now much more immune to the pain.
