Who Are The Asians?
It came as a surprise when the term "Asians" was googled. After clicking on 'images', they were mostly of Asian girls and women in improper positions and almost naked. Nearly all of the images were of young women who are normally labeled "yellow" and, in this case, viewed as sexual objects. Same results were seen when searching for the term "Asians" at Yahoo.com and duckduckgo !
In the West, when using the term "Asians", the two most common characteristics that come to people's mind are "yellow skin" and "almond eyes", despite that Asia includes 49 countries with a diversity in skin color, eye color and shape as well as a diversity in religions and cultures that surpasses the diversities in all other continents. These countries extend from Yemen to Iraq in the southwest, India and Indonesia in the south, China and Japan in the east and Mongolia and Kazakhstan in the north. It is the largest and most populated continent on earth. All major religions were born in Asia. Despite that Arabs, Persians and Turks have been part of Asia, they are not called Asians. In the mind of Europeans and Euro-Americans, Asians are those with yellow skin and narrow almond-like eyes. This notion was exaggerated with humor by the Indian-Japanese comedian Dan Nainan as you will find in the following video, a strongly recommended short comedy sketch.
These three major groups (Arabs, Persians and Turks) have been lump summed as Middle Eastern or Near Eastern. Middle of or near what? In addition to these categorizations, Arabs have also been referred to as Moors and their origin and contributions have been wrongfully documented. They are perhaps the only ethnic group that has existed in both Asia and Africa long before Islam.
There is a need to counteract these labels and stereotypes: If you are interested in joining the discussion and our efforts to learn and educate each other about Asians, be that Afghans, Arabs, Armenians, Chinese, Indians, Indonesians, Japanese, Koreans, Malaysians, Turks and others, you maybe interested in attending our event. Asians of all backgrounds are especially encouraged to attend it and to organize, host or participate in future events.
