Reducing Social Isolation among seniors: Ideas to solutions

This is our first, topic-specific working group meeting. The group's goal is to work together to tease out the details of specific problems in the category of social isolation among seniors, and ultimately create new products and services that in some way reduce those problems.

Please come if you would like to commit real time and energy to trying to meet this goal, working together with like-minded people.

At this meeting we need to identify a topic leader team that want to drive the work, and agree on some goals and timelines. We will have plenty of time to brainstorm the problems together. And we will talk about the path along which we need to travel to meet the goals, and how we will get there.

This will be a working meeting, so please come ready to participate.

Anyone is welcome who has an interest in this topic. You certainly do not need to be technical. In fact, it is probably most useful if you have deep understanding of the actual "problem". Because that is often the missing ingredient in discussions like this.

Anyone interested is welcome, whether you can spend a lot of time working on the topic, or just a little time.

I find that virtual pet thing to be rather demeaning. Do you want to interact with a cartoon pet when you are the one considered to be 'the senior'? I am sorry if my comment comes off as harsh.

I've met the founder and have seen the product. Perhaps it's for people with diminished cognitive ability? Hopefully the later versions of the product will look more real.

At ASA 2014, I met the young MIT founder of GeriJoy.com. They provide a tablet with a virtual pet app. The senior interacts with the pet, but there is a real person playing the role of the pet.

    Rich Content and Screen Size:
A 2013 survey by the Consumer Electronics Association found that Americans owned approximately 338 million televisions, only 27 million of which were smart TVs. John Buffone, who follows the consumer electronics industry for the NPD Group, a consulting company, predicted smart TV ownership would climb to 37 million by the beginning of 2015.

Rob Aksman, co-founder and chief experience officer of BrightLine, said it was appropriate for Walt Disney Parks and Resorts to commission an app because it had “a lot of rich content consumers care about.” The large size of screens on many high-definition smart TVs should also benefit Disney, he added, because “screen size matters when it comes to influencing consumer behavior.”

Alan Teel, MD writes in his book, "Alone and Invisible No More" of his experiences in providing aging-in-place services in Maine. A good background for our meeting.

If having the meeting in Los Gatos or Newark were preferable, I believe I can provide a site.

I am interested in what comes out of this topic category, but I am limited in the number of evenings that I can allocate and of the number of trips up to San Carlos each month.
