Hike the Canyon: Join The Friends of GCSNA & Sierra Club for a 4-7 mile hike

  • NOTE: Keep a weather-eye out! If unfavorable weather is predicted, the Sierra Club co-leader will email the hike's current status for Saturday am no later than Friday evening via MeetUp to those RSVPing. To check on GCSNA trail conditions participants can call GCSNA [masked]) at 7:30 am Saturday, go the the GCSNA website twitter feed (, or the GCSNA Facebook page, or call the Sierra Club co-leader to verify trails are open. On inclement mornings the hike will not depart before 8:30 am, allowing most people to check and still make it out to the natural area...

    Join the Friends of Government Canyon and the Sierra Club for a jointly-led guided hike on one of the many trails at Government Canyon State Natural Area. Length of the hike will range from 4 to 7 miles depending on the group. Limited to the first 12 hikers; subject to cancellation.

    Open to ages 13 and over; minors must be accompanied by an adult; no pets please. Dress appropriately for conditions(consider sunscreen, hat, raingear, ...)and wear sturdy shoes for hiking over rough terrain; bring two liters of water and a snack.

    GCSNA is located at 12861 Galm Rd (Take FM 1560 west from Helotes to Galm Rd). There is a $6 entrance fee ($3 seniors). Meet 7:45 am at the Visitors Center by the rainwater harvesting tower for an 8:00 am departure with finish by noon. Difficulty: Moderate (some steep/rocky sections).
