Intro to canyoneering in Alamogordo
This is a beginner canyoneering hike. If you are an experienced hiker in this area you will probably be bored. Hmmmm. Perhaps I should not have said "beginner"... even though the pace will be slowed and the group will be small, this will not be an easy outing. Four hours of climbing boulders and steep inclines requires a pretty high level of strength & cardio fitness. From Oliver Lee State Park parking lot we will walk less than a half-mile to the drainage of Lawson Springs. We will go up that canyon to experience stepping over big rocks and navigating up large boulders. There are a couple of climbs but since I took a complete beginner up it last weekend with no problems, I don't foresee any issues with the difficulty of the course For our descent, we can either go down Lawson Steps and enjoy some more boulder hopping or if the group is tired, we can descend the official Dog Canyon Trail. Plan on 3 to 4 hours to complete the route. Long pants, hiking boots, gloves, hat and an overabundance of water are recommended. Hiking poles tend to get in the way in areas like this. Neither is it suitable for dogs or children By starting up the canyon with us you are promising to blame no one for anything

    What we're about

Hidden in the local canyons, winding around the nearby ridges... hiking routes abound!

We come together to share the information and experiences to be celebrated out and about on these routes. Hiking is the emphasis, but Trail Work... Mountain Biking...Backpacking... Route Documentation... and Discussion Groups (especially on the cross relationships relative to health and aging!) are all part of the potentials of coming together in and through this Meetup.

Ideally, we can grow a steady calendar of weekly events for recreation and training.

We welcome folks to Join us as Event Organizers: post your hikes, bike rides, Runs... any Fitness related event!
