Cyberscribes - Cruising the Genres Challenge

Cruising the Genres Challenge!

Many writers stick to one genre while others write in several. Sometimes our writing straddles
genres. This challenge is to create ONE story that cruises through three genres. Story should be no longer than 3,000 words. We will not be reading out loud but will exchange copies to read. Please bring 8 copies of your story. This meeting will not be about readings but about discussion. Discussion will include: how did you have to change your writing when the genre changed? Did the characters have to change? Was it difficult to write one genre purely? Why did you choose the three you did? Was writing outside your normal genre difficult? Did you choose your current “normal” genre instinctively, due to writing style or for commercial reasons or all of the above?

Genres to choose from:

Alternate Universe                Comedy                    Drama

Dystopian                            Erotic                        Espionage

Fantasy                               Folktale                     Gothic

Historical                             Horror                       Military

Procedural - Medical, legal or police                        Romance

Science Fiction                     Steampunk                Superhero

Supernatural                        Thriller                      Time Travel

Tragedy                               War                           Western

Whodunit

This was a good challenge. Wish I had a little more time to finish it, but oh well. The feedback was good. I wonder if we should have "challenge follow-up", a chance to incorporate some of the comments. That could help some of us that are weak in specific areas to improve. What do you think?

I think that this is an excellent idea. Julia, could that be our challenge for next week?

An ingenious assignment. Most interesting, entertaining turnout.

So how do you know you're a writer?
When the challenge won't let you alone until you write it even though you've got plenty of other stuff to do.

Just saying goodbye to 2 weeks of family guests. Overloaded with unwanted duties. But I can make a start -- maybe.
