  • Hey, Everyone!

Our book club meets the first Tuesday of the month. Here's the January meetup.

February's book is The Amulet of Samarkand, by Jonathan Stroud. Stroud is a wonderful new discovery for me. His plots are complex enough to keep me entertained (and I'm not easily entertained.) His humor is rich. His characters are very real.

This is the first in the Bartamaeus trilogy, about a lovable and hilarious (and demonic) demon. Great adventure story, including a snotty and overconfident teenager who wants to be a great magician and doesn't understand the powers he's toying with. And yet somehow he makes things work. Hmm. Maybe he's not what he seems on the surface

    Here's the Amazon blurb:

Nathaniel is a magician's apprentice, taking his first lessons in the arts of magic. But when a devious hot-shot wizard named Simon Lovelace ruthlessly humiliates Nathaniel in front of his elders, Nathaniel decides to kick up his education a few notches and show Lovelace who's boss. With revenge on his mind, he summons the powerful djinni, Bartimaeus. But summoning Bartimaeus and controlling him are two different things entirely, and when Nathaniel sends the djinni out to steal Lovelace's greatest treasure, the Amulet of Samarkand, he finds himself caught up in a whirlwind of magical espionage, murder, and rebellion.

I've set up a link on my author website so that you can buy the best edition cheaply and easily. Just go here:

    The Amulet of Samarkand

and then click the link for book. The order will go through Amazon, so you can get free shipping if you order enough.

I'm open to various activities at our meeting - discussion, reviews, creative activities, dramatic readings??? Bring your ideas.

By the way, if anyone would like to review a different book at any time, let me know and I'll set up a meetup that you can run and I'll make sure everyone finds out about it. That way you can review your favorite genres.

Call me if you have quesitons!
