Please come to our May meeting! We'll be discussing the book, Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother, by Amy Chua.
In lively, entertaining nonfiction prose, Chua imparts what she claims is the secret behind the stereotypical Asian-American child's phenomenal success: the Chinese mother, insisting on excellent academic performance, top grades, and respect for authority. Critics of this controversial book say self-esteem should come first. They call Chua’s emphasis on threats, monitoring, and shaming a form of child abuse. Chua says her results speak for themselves. We'll read the book, discuss Chua's techniques, and decide for ourselves.
Please RSVP to the Meetup site.
Feel free to come even if you haven't finished (or started) the book, but be aware that there will be spoilers!
Bring a friend if you'd like, but please let us know in your RSVP, so we can be sure to snag a big enough table.
