The sun-shaped pie has a story dating back several millennia, and many countries still keep the tradition alive by eating it at the beginning of January every year. King’s Day, also called the Epiphany is the day the Three Kings are said to have presented their gifts to baby Jesus. In France, this day is called Le jour des roisor La fête des rois and Galette des Roisor Kings Cake is eaten to honor the day.

The season for King’s cake extends from the end of the Twelve Days of Christmas (Twelfth Night and Epiphany Day), up until the end of Shrovetide: Mardi Gras, "Fat Tuesday," or Shrove Tuesday; the day before the start of Lent.

The French version of the king's cake has an almond-flavoured filling. A bean is hidden inside the cake, and the one who finds it in her/his slice becomes the king or queen for the day!
