Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov (a banned book)

Thanks for voting in the Banned Books poll. This was the clear winner.

"One of the most controversial novels of the twentieth century, Vladimir Nabokov's Lolita is a strange, troubling love story told by the one of the most unreliable narrators in literature.

Poet and pervert, Humbert Humbert becomes obsessed by twelve-year-old Lolita and seeks to possess her, first carnally and then artistically, out of love, 'to fix once for all the perilous magic of nymphets'. Is he in love or insane? A silver-tongued poet or a pervert? A tortured soul or a monster? Or is he all of these? Humbert Humbert's seduction is one of many dimensions in Nabokov's dizzying masterpiece, which is suffused with a savage humour and rich, elaborate verbal textures."

"The book's appearance sparked a flurry of publicity in France, where it was banned as a "dangerous book" until 1958. Lolita would eventually be banned in England, Australia, Burma, Belgium, and Austria and, at the local level, in some American communities. The controversy over the book only fueled sales. On September 17, 1958, the Cincinnati Public Library banned Lolita. The following week it reached number one on the bestseller list."

"Lolita has lost none of its power to shock and awe." Well, we'll be the judge of that...

    Hi all

I'm just writing to ask you all to get stuck into the bookclub meetup without me, tonight. I can't make it to Cafe Krom until after 21:00 so i will need you to organise the discussion without me. i have an unavoidable appointment until 21:00. i am sorry about this, especially as there are a lot of new attendees.

I think regular, Jon Gurney, should be familiar with how the usual bookclub discussion go so I suggest he takes the lead. But if not, and he can't make it anymore, whoever feels the urge!

It's a big group, but i have called ahead to let the bar know to expect you all and they will help to make space available if needed.

As i said, i will come along about 21:20 and see how the discussion is going. Really interested to hear what you all thought of Lolita.

    Cheers

    Cathy

I've never attended a book club and 'Lolita' has been on my 'unread books shelf' for years... this is a great opportunity! :-)
