Still your mind and open your heart to the Divine presence through devotional chanting! As Swami Kriyananda (J. Donald Walters) says in his book, Awaken to Superconsciousness: "Spiritual chanting is heartfelt prayer, deepened by the dimension of music and by the building power of repetition. Repetition is not for the purpose of getting the Lord’s attention: It is to deepen the intensity of one’s own prayer." Since the purpose of devotional chanting is to help us go inward, Ananda kirtans consist of periods of chanting alternating with short, then gradually longer periods of meditation. We sing beautiful chants by Paramhansa Yogananda and Swami Kriyananda; almost all are in English, although there will be traditional Indian chants as well. Most chants are simple to learn, so you’ll be able to join in easily, accompanied by Indian harmoniums, guitars, drums, and kirtals (bells). Everyone is welcome to come and sing; if you would like to join in playing an instrument, please let us know ahead of time.
