Kesugi Ridge Trail -- 28 Mile Fast Hike / Slow Run

  • Sep 1, 2013 · 9:00 AM
  • Byers Lake

Let's cross this one off the list for the summer! This will require at least two cars. Arrangements all depend on how many people are interested, so we'll determine this later. If there's an interest, we could create a second group for those wanting to go slower (or faster).

(Yes, I stole this from the Johnson Pass description. Ha!)

I know that a few of us are running in the race on September 7. I'm not familiar with the course at all, so I thought this would be a good way to check it out before hand. Anyhow, right now, I'm thinking of camping a night a Byers Lake and then hiking and driving back the next day, but am definitely open to suggestions if others are interested!

Hey everyone, thanks for coming out, this was fun!

It was harder than I thought. We could only "fast hike" portions due to the terrain and vegetation. There's a section in the middle that's below the tree line and was perfect bear territory. Plus, the rain never quit... we were soaked and muddy, but it was worth it!

It was definitely tougher than I thought that it would be, but it was fun. The landscapes were definitely cool. Also, thanks for posting those photos!

Awesome people and gourmet camping food followed by 28 miles of Terence Trent D'Arby (thanks to Chris)... it was a great trip!

Last minute plan... me, Christina, and Jessica are hoping to come join you guys for camping but do a shorter run out-and-back, unless we fanagle (I'm sure that's a real word) a car shuttle part way. See you in camp. :) [masked]

SO I have been doing a little investigation, the consensus at work is that Byers Lake (http://dnr.alaska.gov/parks/aspunits/matsu/byerslkcamp.htm) has about 70 campsites and should be active, but not too overcrowded for camping. I'll look into a backup plan, I know that a lot of folks make this a two day trip and camp along the route, but that seems to be a good bet for a place to overnight.

I'm thinking right now of leaving early Saturday afternoon so that it is easier to secure a spot or two to camp. As far as getting there goes, I'm willing to drive, and there are plenty of out of the way spots at my house. If people want to meet up here and park Saturday so that no one has to leave their car in a grocery store lot overnight, that would work for me.

There is zero chance of it being full this time of year. I've camped at Byers Lake the last week of August, and only half the sites were taken. Just be prepared for cold...because it's late Fall up there!

That is about when I was thinking as well, Mike. Let's meet at 1PM Saturday and head out as soon as we can get sorted!

Since the time is upon us, I'm at 344 Lynnwood Dr. Unit B. The lot to the west is vacant and several cars can be parked there in addition to a few spaces in the driveway. I can fit 4 other folks in my car, so depending on head count, we can work out who is driving when we get assembled.

For those of us not in love with the idea of camping in rain and cold, what's the estimated departure time on Sunday for the hike? I might need to temper my overly ambitious plans given the reality that I'm actually a big wimp. (I'm also considering snagging a room Saturday night at the Roadhouse in Talkeetna if anyone else is interested...and a room is available.)

I'm guessing this is a 6-7 hour hike/run, right? Or longer??

    August 30, 2013

    • Zach

I think that time is probably about right. I haven't done the route before, but just based on distance and how long most hikes say it takes (2 day hike for a slow berry picking, casual hike). I had guessed 6-10 hours, depending on how fast the group wants to go. I was thinking about heading out of camp around 9 or 10 AM, that should give us daylight for the entire distance and not be too early.

I hope we can do this again mid-September (With Taylor)! I just bought a last-minute plane ticket to Denver. I'll be back on September 9th!

Also, in case weather turns out to be horrible, we could make a game time decision and only run part way, the Ermine Hill trail head is about 14 miles from either end, and we could drop a car there instead of doing the full distance.

    What do y'all think? Ideas?

Oh, also, my phone number is[masked] just in case.

How long does the full 28-mile hike typically take?

      August 29, 2013

  • Mike M

I'm interested in going up Saturday during the day, camping overnight, then coming back late Sunday. I'd also consider going up Friday evening and camping for two nights. This assumes there are camping spots available. I can drive and take two other people + gear, or I'll provide gas money if someone else is driving.

    August 28, 2013

    • Zach

I'd love to go up Friday, but my schedule just isn't going to come together in time. We could totally meet up if you end up going early though!

      August 28, 2013

  • Meredyth

Has anyone investigated camping spot availability? If the weather isn't supposed to be totally crappy - semi-crappy I can potentially handle - I'm on board for this!

Would love to join you on your second attempt. I am still out of town, back on September 4.
If you guys decide to do this overnight, it would be a fast hike rather than a slow run correct.

If I can catch a ride with someone who is planning on running the whole course I will be in for sure! I don't trust my car for more than 20 miles.

I have family in town next weekend. I was hoping this was later. Oh well!

    August 23, 2013

  • Mariah S.

I'm a solid maybe. I REALLY want to do this one, however I have family in town until the eighth. I will see if they are on board with entertaining themselves for a day, but if it doesn't work out I hope this one comes up again soon, I will be there for sure at a later date!

    August 23, 2013

  • Zach

OK, I updated the invite to show starting the hike/run on Sunday morning 9/1/13. Sounds like there may be interest to do another trip later, too if this one doesn't work for folks!

    August 23, 2013

  • Zach

So, it occurs to me that there are really just two weekends left prior to the 7th. One in a couple of days and one is Labor Day. Like I said, I'm totally up for doing this a couple of times, but what do people think about one of them being an overnight over one night of that Labor day weekend?

    1 · August 22, 2013

    • Mike M

I'm up for it, or down with it, or whatever, on Labor Day weekend. I'll probably end up working that Monday, so I prefer to return Saturday or Sunday evening.

      1 · August 22, 2013

  • Mike M

Zach - I'd consider doing it twice if you end up wanting to make two trips.

Jenny and i might be able to attend, company will finally be gone after 8/28.

You read my mind, Zach! I was just going to post this! I'm free whenever.

can we run this when i am back from maine???

    August 21, 2013

    • Zach

I'd like to do it once before September 7, but if that doesn't work for folks, I might just go do it solo before and then with a group sometime later. I don't feel one bit bad about a few chances to see a view like this: http://i.imgur.com/kW...

      When do you get back??

      August 21, 2013

    • Taylor

right on. sounds good. my return date is tbd :) mid september...... so after the race. that picture is GLORIOUS!!!!!!!
