The concept is related to the eastern one of the silent transmission. No worries no arms are to be twisted. It'll happen or it won't. Either is fine

If we are all one - and there is no "I" - then enlightenment has already been achieved.

"we are one" is a statement that describes what our actuality "is". The"I" is a contributor to the "oneness on the "all". Enlightenment is the discovery in the "process of joining both the " I " and the "all" in one harmonious "equilibrium", so to attain enlightenment one must first seek the "self" in order to place himself in the "all" lest he does not know where he is or why he is there nor will he understand his purpose in the grand design.

I was assuming the phrase "self inquiry" was a reference to Ramana's basic method... Okay, I just did a google search on "ramana self inquiry pdf" ... and found this http://www.realization.org/down/ramana.self-enquiry.mahadevan.1994.pdf
.. and there are other sites that have it.
It's fairly short. The method is simple.

From #12 - ''If the mind should stray away from its state, then immediately one should enquire, “Oh! Oh! We are not the body etc.! Who are we?” and thus one should reinstate the mind in that (pure) state. The enquiry “Who am I?” is the principal means to the removal of all misery and the attainment of the supreme bliss. When in this manner the mind becomes quiescent in its own state, Self-experience arises of its own accord, without any hindrance.'' - Is this what you were getting at? When I read this, I see in a way that makes my experience impossible to understand, yet not contradictory.

The work came after Byron Katie sat with her transformation for a few years. It hit her so strongly as I understand it that she was completely without any identification with her story. To the point where she simply had to trust someone when they said "I'm your daughter, son, husband etc." So my understanding is that Grace plays a big part in anyone's awakening process. We use the tools of inquiry until we break them or "ourselves" and discard them or "ourselves" and then it's up to Grace to step in on its own terms. Up to that point we can only prepare ourselves for that eventuality while maintaining an attitude of what Richard Rose called inbetweeness. This involves wanting enlightenment or truth at all cost while simultaneously being okay with never getting it. Even this "attitude" has to be dropped at some point lest it become dogma.

Equilibrium, harmony, polarities, and vibration are all keys to ones true self...put them into practice..be aware of the parts they play in your program, be aware of where you are standing...not where you stood- not where you will stand--- but where are standing, what your standing on, what your mind sees, and what your eyes don't see...its a beautiful, and ugly realization which simultaneously gives the mind light. Let me know how it goes!

Who are you without "Your Stories" was the question asked? I would say the creator of the stories - the one who chooses not to follow those random thoughts. You are the pen and your life is the book with all the blank pages.

A more local resource for inquiry is Fred Davis. He provides one on one sessions that guide a person to non dual nature. I've experienced this for myself and can recommend it. Another option is his book "The book of Undoing". In it is a dialogue between Fred and a client. If read as though you're the client, it's a powerful read that may leave you undone. 108 pages

In my view both Ramana's and Katie's respective inquiries head in the same direction. A place where thoughts are no longer believed.

    March 19, 2014

    • Scott R.

Unbelievable. (joke) So, did Byron Katie's experience described in "Dying in to Love" happen because she followed her process, or did it happen for other reasons and the "process" arise from her insight? I am asking, I don't know anything about her. Lots of processes arise *after the fact* and they can help, but they don't DO it.

      March 19, 2014

  • Scott R.

So, apparently the phrase "self inquiry" has a particular meaning to people in this group that I did not know about - to do with Byron Katie's work, I guess? I never thought to do that, since if I am asking I don't have the answers. When I don't know, I just synthesize. Everything is made-up anyway. We are made in God's image, so that is our role: Reality Creation. But I do like to compare notes with other Creators, like the person who wrote about the Enneagram. I can't possibly live long enough to make up everything, so it is helpful to get some from others. "Bad artists copy, great artists steal." But that is just too 2.

As I understand it, enlightenment is not about describing the ego, dissecting the ego, analyzing the ego, or perfecting the ego. It is about stopping the habit of believing that the ego is who and what you are.

    March 18, 2014

    • Scott R.

I added a Discussion about the Enneagram. To me, Enlightenment is about more light - seeing more. It is about more Being, more Awareness, more Bliss - the Sat, Tat, Aum trilogy / trinity / triune, thingy. Also called Sat-Chit-Ananda.
