The Inaugural and Awesome AngularJS Toronto Meetup

AngularJS is taking the web application development world by storm and for good reason. Come to our inaugural meet up to hear six great sessions and learn why. I'm also excited to announce that after 3 weeks we are already the 10th largest AngularJS meetup on Earth.

The Inaugural and Awesome Agenda

We have a great line up of speakers, including talks from rangle.io (next-gen web architecture and development), MoPals.com (a social media loyalty platform), uken.com (cross-platform mobile gaming), and TrialFire.com (a startup changing how cloud software vendors drive new business).

Also attending will be Matias Niemelä from Google's AngularJS team and of www.yearofmoo.com blogging fame. Matias will be showing some of the new features regarding ngAnimate and full-scale animations in AngularJS and will be happy to answer questions from attendees regarding AngularJS.

The event will be at Polar Mobile, a company defining the future of mobile media with a cloud-based media publishing and application development platform for mobile devices.

Doors open at 7:00pm.

7:00 - Arrivals and Introductions
Arrive, say hi, get comfortable. From 7:10pm or so there will be a few 2 minute intro talks from attendees who aren't presenting but have interesting AngularJS projects to share.

7:20 - The 5D's of AngularJS - Nick Van Weerdenburg, rangle.io
Nick will give a high-level overview of why AngularJS is so impressive, why it is so different, and why you should care.

Nick is an experienced consultant and developer who has been building, selling marketing, and deploying web applications since 1996. He thinks AngularJS is insanely great.

7:40 - AngularJS for Social Media Startups - Andrew Leschinsky and Arsen Tumanyan, MoPals.com
MoPals.com is a miles-driven loyalty platform that rewards you for your social media engagement. They have been using AngularJS for 5 months and will share their experiences and excitement regarding AngularJS.

Andrew Leshinksy is the CTO of MoPals.com and Arsen Tumanyan is the Project manager.

8:00 - BREAK

8:10 - AngularJS In Your Pocket, uken.com
Uken is using angular to build their newest games and are super excited about it. Topics will include AngularJS for mobile, non-http protocol for server communication, and using advanced CSS3 animations.

Uken is one of the only true cross platform gaming companies around. We build fun social and mobile games that make people stare, smile, jump, and feel awesome inside.

8:30 - AngularJS and the Scala Play Framework - Max Kremer, TrialFire
Max will give an introduction to application development with AngularJS and the Scala Play Framework for Java, applying the knowledge, paradigms and patterns learned from a decade of application development on the J2EE stack.

Max is an entrepreneur and software developer. He was the co-founder of Datastay (acquired by Autodesk in 2011) and is a co-founder of Trialfire (seeded May 2013), a startup dedicated to changing how cloud software companies drive new business.

8:50 - ngAnimate and Full-scale Animations in AngularJS - Matias Niemelä, www.yearofmoo.com
Matias will give an overview of the new ng-animate and full-scale animation features in AngularJS

Matias Niemelä lives in Toronto but works for Google with the core AngularJS team. He runs a popular blog at www.yearofmoo.com and can be found on twitter at @yearofmoo.

9:10 - Closing Comments - Nick Van Weerdenburg, rangle.io

I really enjoyed the multiple presentations on AngularJS. It was great to get not only an overview of the framework, but to see what people are doing with it and have a look at some code.

    FYI,

Interesting: Angular.js announces port for Dart

    http://news.dartlang.org/2013/06/angularjs-announces-port-for-dart.html

    June 12, 2013

    • Nick Van W.

I'm not surprised- there seems to have been a buzz building around Dart the last few months. I think Typescript and Scala have also made types cool again :) And of course JavaScript has made braces and semicolons cool again!

      June 12, 2013

  • Alexey D.

There are several areas may be interesting for the audience:

    Templating:
    1. Usage of $compile WebApi and Communication:
    1. Usage of interceptors (data validation , error handling)
    2. $resource vs $http
    3. OData (linq type expressions) BreezeJS (http://www.breezejs.com/) UI area:
    1. Angular UI extension. In particular Angular-UI-Bootstrap
    2. Bringing jQuery plugins into Angular scope using directives (WYSIWYG editors, Notification (noty,...), datepicker, date-time picker, ...)

    June 12, 2013

    • Nick Van W.

Great suggestions. We will try to have a deep dive or two into each of these topics at each meetup.

Would be interesting to learn how to handle authentication and authorization, for example, site where some sections are secured and some public.

The latest video on Angular from it's creator, Miško Hevery, and it's product manager, Brad Green (and author of 'AngularJS' from O'Reilly). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HCR7i5F5L8c

This is a great talk for getting a deeper sense of what AngularJS is all about, and the talk is friendly to developers, designers, and managers.
