Circus elephant in deadly incident was a frequent visitor to Florida

April 12th, 2010

“Dumbo,” the elephant who killed a circus worker Friday evening in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, gave rides and performed in daily shows at this year’s Osceola County Fair (February 12-21) in Kissimmee, the Central Florida Fair (February 25-March 7) in Orlando and at the Sarasota County Fair (March 19-28).

According to The Times Leader newspaper, the elephant stomped on the circus worker between performances of the Irem Shrine Circus. The worker was alone with Dumbo at the time, so what led to the incident may never be known.

Dumbo, owned by Terry Frisco of Illinois and Florida, frequently performs with circuses and at county fairs across the eastern United States. Dumbo was captured in Africa in the early 1980s and imported into the United States.

This is not the first time that a circus elephant has stomped, crushed or gored someone, and it won’t be the last. This tragic incident could have happened here in Florida. Please contact the fairs that hosted Dumbo in 2010 and urge them not to include elephants or other potentially dangerous circus acts in future fairs.
