Hi Everyone,

Some of you may remember Yoda (also spelled Yotah), the Wheaten Terrier that had to have his leg removed by the Doc at Pinellas County Animal Services (PCAS) and I fostered him for a while.  He and his brother Tygger, were confiscated because of animal cruelty.   Yoda had to have his leg removed because he had been hit by a car previously and the owner didn't take him to the vet.  They were both emaciated, sick, had ear and eye infections, skin allergies,,,, and the owner wasn't doing anything about it.  While I was fostering, I heard about the Wheaten Terrier Rescue from the amazing Judy Elliott, so I contacted them because I didn't want Yoda sitting at the shelter while the investigation was on-going.  Well, not only did they take Yoda, they also took his brother!!!  Amazing!

Wheaten Terrier Club of Greater Tampa Bayan amazing rescue that has become very special to me.

I wanted to give you an update on them. Tygger is doing well.  But it turns out that Yotah isn't.  It's  :'(

See the 2 emails below from his awesome foster mommy, Suzanne.

Yoda / Cody's medical expenses are super high, so I encourage everyone to send a donation, any amount, for Yoda and Tygger.  Just go to http://www.flwheatenclub.org/rescue.  You can put a note that it's for Cody (Yotah) and Tygger.

Photos are attached, if they come through.

Thank you,
Andrea Barlow

Oh Andrea!

Cody is holding his own. He is being treated for the chronic kidney failure, but seems to be doing well.  Some days are better than others.  The symptoms I’m supposed to be watching for are vomiting and diarrhea, loss of appetite, and general illness.  His labs seem to be holding; no better but no worse.  So, we have our fingers crossed that by some miracle the kidneys will regenerate and recover, but it’s a long shot.  His mood is silly!  He is such a good, good dog; and he has such a sense of humor!  He hides things on me and is so proud of himself when I bust him … loves to go for his walks and especially loves the beach!  Does NOT like vacuums, lawn mowers, or things with wheels like bikes and skate boards – he goes ballistic; but very obedient when I tell him to settle down.  We’ve pretty much have determined he’s not adoptable at this point, so he will stay with me.  He’s on a specialized diet and medication, and I pretty much have him in diapers (poor kid).  I’ve talked to my vet about medication for the incontinence, and she’s looking into it.  Oh, and although he’s still skinny, he has gained 5 lbs!

Tygger, on the other hand, is thriving.  His skin is all healed, as are his ear and eye infections.  He eats like a cow and loves the foster’s swimming pool.  She has two other Wheaten’s and they are teaching him how to be a happy dog

You can donate to the rescue from the website at: http://www.flwheatenclub.org/rescue.  That would be wonderful, Andrea.  Thank you for your offer … Cody’s care has been very expensive, but he is worth every penny!  I'll send new pics when I get them downloaded!

Take care!

Hi Andrea,

Sorry I didn't get back to you right away ... I know you are anxiously awaiting some news on Cody.  I'm not at home right now so I don't have the pics to send you, but will forward them as soon as I get back.  But I do have a little bit of time, so I wanted to get an email off to you.

Oh poor Cody ... the boy has been through a lot.  He went to our rescue vet last Monday for a full exam; they pulled blood, and gave me some antibiotics for his sneezing and also for his eyes and ears.  Blood showed his count was super low and showing a dangerous level of anemia.  So, he was transferred to Emergency Vet Services on Belcher.  They were going to do a transfusion on him, but opted to just give him fluids and do some additional testing.  While I was in the waiting room waiting for him to be brought back to a room, the receptionist came out and told me that Cody and his brother Tygger had been brought into TBEVS on April 28th ... a young girl had found them running in Clearwater and since they were chipped, the owner was called.  Cody's leg was broken at that time!  No treatment was done, it was x-rayed though and bandaged up.  The receptionist gave me the vet reports and X-rays for the cruelty case.  She said they looked just horrendous.  The owner finally came and picked the dogs up 12 hours after being notified, and said she would follow-up with her vet in Palm Harbor (which I'm sure was not done).  Now, what happened between April 29th and the time they were taken into custody at PCAS, we just don't know.  But we did notify Dr. Thomas.

While Cody was at TBEVS, the CBC results showed Cody was in kidney failure; which the vet thought could why he was so anemic.  I picked him up Tuesday and took him home; let him rest on Wednesday and then the remainder of the week he's been going to our vet during the day for fluids.  In fact, he is there now and I'll be picking him up soon.  He's on several medications and a very special diet.  His blood work will be repeated next Friday to check his kidney function, but his blood count is still very low.  We just don't know how he is going to do ... we're doing all we can for him, but the damage may already have been done and irreversible.

Mood-wise, he is soooo happy!  He is really bonding with me, and such a good boy.  Loves to hang out in the yard with me, and go for rides, to the park and to the beach -- he loves the water!  He is an amazing dog, and I'm just so mad at his owner ... at least he's having the time of his life with me right now ... in addition to the wonderful kindness and love you showed him :)

I'll keep you posted on how he does this week ... and I'll send the pics when I get home.  He is still real thin, but he coat is coming in beautifully.  And he's learning to balance real well on the back leg ... still a bit clumsy, but I certainly see improvements.

Take care and I'll be in touch soon :)     -- Suzanne
