Ian McEwan's "Atonement"

Happy Valentine's Day. Let's read about love gone wrong in Ian McEwan's "Atonement". I have not actually read this book, but the film adaptation is, of course, fabulous! If anyone would like to volunteer to host a film event in conjunction with this book discussion, let me know. This book is available for free download audio but it is only the abridged version. The Ann Arbor Library does have the unabridged version on CD. If this interests you check out the File section to learn more. Remember that our Thursday discussions have been transformed into Wednesday discussions. Make sure you come on the right day!
We will be meeting at the Borders downtown (near U of M campus). Borders has graciously offered to sponsor our group and provide us with discounts (more info on that coming soon). Remember, parking in the structure on Maynard and Thompson is free after 6 PM.

Hi Everybody, For those Atonement fans out there, I read an excellent review of McEwan's new novel, Solar, in Time magazine yesterday. Here is a link to the online copy: http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1975331,00.html Marie

Very enjoyable discussion! The very different opinions made it very lively. Will be back again.

It's so much fun to hear everyone's opinion to this book. It really was an intriguing read and I'm deffinitly going to pass it on to my book loving pals.

I loved this book--the push and pull of the imagery, the relatability I had to Briony, the gripping death scene of Robbie. I thought we had a good talk about it. Looking forward to the next one!

If the structure is free after 6, what if we park at a few minutes before 6? How does that work?

Agree, it's getting better. I got confused today though b/c yesterday I was reading Anna K and today opened Atonement and was wondering who "cecilia" was for a few seconds. Will have to focus on one at a time.

This book was a hard start, but once you hit about page 100, it becomes a pretty easy read. It was so well worth it.

Parking at Maynard and Thompson ("Borders structure") is NOT free after 6pm. It's the UM structure at Thompson and Jefferson that is free after 6pm -- a 5 min walk.

i'm finding the key to this book for me is complete concentration with no distractions. i am appreciating the writing more this try. while the scene descriptions are excellent, they are very long (i.e. 9 line 1 sentence description of a room on page 19). i also watched the movie last night and now have the desire to see what is "different".

exactly. i plan to try again on Friday evening. the story line sounds interesting, but the writing is like trudging thru heavy jello. i still want to read it, but will need to be much more focused.

I feel you Rebecca. I'm about 40 pages in, and it's taking all of my concentration.
