Docker+R and Outlier and Change Point Detection

Please join us for the March 2016 installment of our monthly meetup series!

This month's meetup will again be hosted at Ann Arbor SPARK, who will also be providing pizza for the group.

We'll have a shorter talk by Kraig Stevenson on outlier and change point detection using Twitter's R packages AnomalyDetection and BreakoutDetection.

Blake Nicholson will give our main presentation, which will cover using R with Docker, a standard interface for creation, distribution and deployment of software.

Docker has taken the software engineering world by storm.  It provides a lightweight, isolated environment in which programs can be run.  It has broad applications across all aspects of software engineering.  In this talk, Blake will provide background on Docker, its architecture, and how to use it.  He'll then go through several examples of using R within a Docker container and the advantages such a setup provides.

Blake Nicholson leads the Data Science and Software Engineering teams at Seelio.  He has applied quantitative methods and software development in numerous business settings throughout his career.  His experience ranges from optimizing the size and structure of sales teams to leveraging analytical methods to find, grow, and keep employees at Facebook.

Join us at HopCat after the talks for the usual food and drinks!!

Change Point Detection was fascinating. The statistics were beyond the frontier of my ignorance, but I felt like I followed things fairly well. Nicely presented, and questions well-handled.

I really enjoyed the Docker talk. I had enough Docker under my belt to let me focus on the things that were new to me. I really appreciated seeing a worked docker-compose example, including that persistent volume for postgres data. Nice! I still have many questions about docker deployment best practices, but that's another kind of group I think!

The outlier and change point detection I'm very interested in, and want to run some data through.

Wish I could go to this one! I'll be looking for the slides online after at least. :)
