What we're about

About this Group: Thank you so very much for visiting Antiquities 1906 Hiking Meetup Group of King of Prussia, PA. This Meetup group is about moderate to strenuous hikes. Most of our hikes that are not local will be moderate to strenuous hikes about 12-16 miles in length. Occasionally we will schedule an ultra strenuous hike for people who enjoy them. The purpose of this group is to get people outdoors, be in and connect with nature, enjoy beautiful views, get some serious exercise, and have fun with like-minded people! You can always improve your personal best in a safe and gradual manner! While we might gather time to time for a post-hike refueling if there is enough interest, our focus will always be hiking, and being in nature, and not partying. We will always hike with safety in mind.

The Name: Why the name Antiquities 1906? I am always fascinated by the Antiquities Act of 1906. This Act, signed into the law on June 8, 1906 by President Theodore Roosevelt, allows the Office of the President to set aside large areas for protection and preservation without any interference from the Congress. Over the years, this Act has been used over hundred times by the Presidents from both political parties and almost always in good faith and with good intentions. The Supreme Court has repeatedly upheld the constitutionality of this Act. Proclamation of Devils Tower as the first National Monument by Theodore Roosevelt on September 24, 1906 was the first use of this Act. Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument is the largest area (140,000 sq. miles) set aside for protection under this Act by President George W. Bush on June 15, 2006.

Tuesday Evening Hikes at Oaks

Oaks Parking for Tuesday Evenings

Hike: People, it is that time of the year again! We will be moving to Oaks for Tuesday evening hikes. Night hiking in Valley Forge is prohibited per park rules. While we will miss Valley Forge, the good news is that, Perkiomen Creek and Schuylkill River are quite scenic and particularly so on nights with even some moonlight. Another positive is that we will always be able to do a minimum of 6 miles at a brisk pace as we won't have to worry about beating the sunset/dusk times . The terrain will be gentler, but we will make it up in speed and distance. I promise, it will continue to be a brisk aerobic workout. We will go to a meeting time of 6.15 pm and hike start (heels up) time of 6.30 pm. Meet at 6.15 pm every Tuesday at Oaks Parking area (GPS:[masked], [masked]). This will be typically a 6.0 to 7.2 mile (average 6.8/mile) hike at a brisk pace. We will hike different routes every week and generally try not to repeat the same route more than once a month. Most of the time you would not need a headlamp. On a really dark night, you might want to use flashlight/headlamp/smart phone for brief sections of the trail. We will generally go to P.J. Whelihan's (about two minutes drive from the hike location to: 180 Mill Road, Oaks, PA 19456. Phone:[masked]) for optional post-hike gathering. Gear: Please wear Fall/Winter wicking layers, winter clothing, hats, gloves, and bring water, rain gear and anything else that you might deem necessary. While snow itself is not much of a problem when hiking this trail, you will need microspikes whenever there is ice on the trail.
