David Walker was a black abolitionist of the 19th century who lived in Boston, MA. His "Appeal to the Coloured Citizens of the World" inspired William Lloyd Garrison, among others, to work for racial justice. He is considered by some to have laid the ideological foundation for Black Nationalism.
We will read and discuss selected excerpts from Walker's "Appeal."
Some questions we'll consider:
• What concepts in the Appeal are new to you, if any?
• What did David Walker include in the Appeal that still applies today?
• What would the Appeal say if it were written today? To whom would it be addressed?
