Paddle The Oswego River, Class 1

The water level is up on the Oswego River! So let's go paddling there on Sunday. This river has been called one of the prettiest in the pine barrens. The Oswego river passes through a beautiful environment of forest, savanna marshes, bogs and tall stands of cedars. The flat and gentle flowing water includes many twisting turns. Please note that last year's  flooding has dropped a few trees down and the path may not be as clear as usual. We will work as a team to get everybody past any obstacles. Photos of last year's trip are here.

Use your own canoe or kayak or rent one. Kayak rental is $42 ($45 if we get less than 7 rentals). Tandem canoe rental is $55 (shared price $27.50 each). Private boats are $20. Prices are based on a group rates, do not include tax and may go slightly up or more likely down based on group size. The outfitter will provide transportation to the put in and will pick us up at the take out.  All participants are required to sign the AMC liability release. If you are renting a kayak or canoe, you will also need to sign a liability release form from our outfitter. There will be an optional dinner gathering after the trip.

Further details will be sent to the group by Friday. Payment will be made directly to Micks Canoe Rental on the morning of the trip. Please be there by 8:30 AM. Arriving earlier is best. You must answer the questions when you RSVP that you are coming.

Requirements (for your safety):

  • You must wear your PFD while on the water. (The PFD will be provided for renters, however you may bring your own)
  • Wear old sneakers, water socks or some other form of foot protection. Flip-flops are not acceptable.
  • Bring water and lunch.

Suggestions (for your comfort):

  • Secure your eyeglasses with a strap. There are many over hanging branches that can remove them.
  • Wear a bathing suit or quick drying clothes suitable for getting wet.
  • Bring sunscreen and insect repellent.
  • Bring a dry bag or waterproof container for your personal belongings.
  • Bring snacks.
  • Have a secure place to carry your car keys.
  • Bring a hat and sunglasses.
  • Have a set of dry clothes in your car so you can change for the ride home.

NOTE: The Google address above may cause problems with your GPS because route 563 has multiple names. Use "5 Patten Lane" for the correct location.

Great trip. I loved the feeling of exploring what felt liked uncharted territory. Thanks Rich for the trip and the great photos.

Two creeks diverged in a wood, and we,
we took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

Rich triumphs again - a grand day out.
Terrific photos, too. Especially the Sundew.

I can't change the name of this Meetup. But Micks was not putting anybody out on the Oswego after the drowning they had the day before. Our alternate trip was an exploration up the Tulpohocken Creek. This rarely paddled creek is only accessable with high water conditions.

    Rich,
I did the Oswego River today. The water level was high and the current fast! There was just one area where you had to crawl into your kayak to get under a tree otherwise it was a fantastic trip.

Thanks Paul. I'll also be checking with Micks. The water should be down a little by Sunday. See you then.

I would love to go, but would need a ride from somewhere I could get to via public transport from Philly. I live in West Philly. Can anyone help me?

I hope you find a ride. It's been a while since we paddled together.

Paddled the Oswego last week. We only had one portage since the water was too high to go under the tree. The current was running fast. The segment downstream of Martha had some challenging twists and turns. It was a blast and I'm looking forward to doing it again!

    • Rich P.

$20 for the shuttle bus in and out with your own boat. Kayak or canoe.

    Rich,

I would like to come and bring my own canoe. I don't have a paddling partner - can you pair me up with someone?

    Adrian.
