French Creek State Park Hike (3C13-14)

Please join us this Sunday July 21st at 9.45 am at Hopewell Lake Boat Launch Area (GPS:[masked], [masked]) for a13-14 mile hike in French Creek State Park. Since there is not much on the calendar this Sunday and the weather is going to be reasonably decent, we will do a hike in French Creek. We have not hiked here since last December. This hike will be in the eastern part of the park on totally different trails from the ones we have done in the past. Expect a decent workout. My thanks to Jennifer Zhang for scouting this hike with me this past February. This will be an all day event - join us only if you have no other plans for that evening. Water, lunch, sturdy shoes, bug spray, and rain gear. Optional post hike dinner. No pets allowed. Click the link below for directions:

WHILE I WILL CARRY EXTRA WATER, PLEASE, PLEASE, BRING AMPLE WATER AND STAY HYDRATED. VERY IMPORTANT! THE CHAPTER ALREADY HAD COUPLE OF INCIDENCES OF HEAT EXHAUSTION THIS SEASON. THIS HIKE IS ABOUT 13-14 MILES LONG.

Bijal, thanks for taking us to the east side of the park. I enjoyed the hike. As I was leaving the park, I turned around and went to the ranger station. It was bothering me that someone else may encounter the yellow jackets and they could be allergic. The rangers were very concerned about what happened to our group. I marked the location on the trail where I think the nest was at. The rangers are going to look for the nest tomorrow. If you have any information that will help then locate the area, call Ranger Dave B[masked]-8194. Also, to treat the sting, scrape the edge of a credit card over the sting to remove the stinger and apply Medicaine. (You can buy Medicaine at a drug store.) Thanks to Ranger Dave B for treating my stings..... I didn't know about the credit card trick or Medicaine.

People, thank you so very much for joining the French Creek Hike today. What a day! First my sincere apologies for being seriously late. While it did not rain at all and it was not as hot as it was during last few days, the humidity and the bugs really bothered me and I am sure to everyone else. I think the yellow jackets (they are wasps and not bees) stung 18 out of 20 of us. I am still feeling the sting! The hike was about 14.5 miles in length and our moving speed was about 3.2/mph. Really enjoyed the dinner, beers, conversation, and air-conditioning at the Inn at Saint Peters – I think we all earned it today. We had 20 people on the hike and 11 joined us for dinner. John, thank you for sweeping. Diane, thank you for your help as well. We’ll try to do it better next time. See you all on a future hike. - Bijal

I might be there at the same time, but already had a trail run planned, working on running and completing the horseshoe trail!
