Appalachian Trail from Rt. 309 to Bake Oven Knob (3C11/12)

  • Apr 19, 2014 · 10:00 AM

Please join us on Saturday April 19th (after we have done our taxes!) for an early Spring hike on a beautiful stretch of Appalachian Trail in Pennsylvania from Rt. 309 to Bake Oven Knob. We will pass beautiful views from the Knife Edge, Bear Rocks, and Bake Oven Knob. This will be an in and out hike with about 11-12 miles roundtrip and rocky terrain. Meet at the trailhead on Rt. 309 across from Blue Mountain Summit Hotel (GPS:[masked], [masked]) at 10.00 am. Sturdy hiking shoes, water, lunch/snacks, and rain gear. Optional post-hike dinner. Well-behaved pets on a leash allowed. Please click on the link below for directions to the trailhead:

Please note that this is an all day hike.  Particularly if the weather is good, we will take time to enjoy the scenery and climb up all the way to the top of Bear Rocks and might even go all the way to the Shelter. This hike is about 11-12 miles in length and the terrain is generally flat but rocky.

I left my camera at the Blue Mountain Summit restaurant. If anyone is hiking in that area, can you please pick it up?

People, thank you so very much for joining the AT hike. The weather could not have been more perfect with a Sunny day and just the right temperatures! We hiked about 11.0 miles round trip including the scramble up the Bear Rocks. Superb visibility allowed for beautiful views from all three vistas – Knife Edge, Bear Rocks, and Bake Oven Knob. We had 27 participants for the hike. My thanks to Michael for helping me lead this hike as we had a large group. My thanks to Rich Pace for taking and posting all the terrific photos as only he could! Larry and Naomi thank you for sweeping. Thanks to John for – not so brief - description of post-hike gathering place! Everyone including, Pam, other Pam, Karen, and Neha did great! Daisy, thank you for making the long drive. We had 17 people at Blue Mt. Restaurant. They were very accommodative with seating arrangements and our finicky orders. Great times! Jamal is forming an out of tune singing band with George! See you all on a future hike. - Bijal

People, weather update; forecast has greatly improved with the latest update. Mostly a Sunny day, no rain, and high in the 60s during the afternoon. It is expected to be really nice during the afternoon. Winds at times could be 10-14/mph and so you should bring a windbreaker/fleece, hat etc. Optional post-hike gathering will be right across the street at Blue Mountain Summit Hotel/Restaurant. See you tomorrow. - Bijal

Please, please, please stay signed in only if you intend to join the hike. Please update your RSVP latest by Wednesday evening if your plans have changed or if you do not intend to join us. This applies to everyone on the waiting list too. Weather forecast has improved markedly; however, please bring rain gear just in case. Hi Bijal... it's been a long time since I've done anything with the group, but always wanted to do this hike. Still need to clear the date, but will ASAP and immediately cancel out if necessary.
