Please join me for a moderate to brisk paced 6-7 mile hike starting at the “Longford Park and Reynolds Dog Park” in Phoenixville, PA. We will hike along the beautiful Schuylkill River and canal using established trails and wide gravel/paved paths. This hike will be at least partially in the dark during this season, so a light is recommended. This is a weekly hike.
I will substitute in more gravel and paved trails to avoid muddy conditions. We will hike between the canal and Schuylkill River to the lock 60 area via the Schuylkill River Trail just next to the canal and Towpath Road. From there we will go along the unpaved Upper Schuylkill River Trail next to the river until we get to the first stream crossing. We will not be going on the Neal Thorpe Trail (known locally as the ravines.) Other routes/destinations include the Lower Perkiomen Valley Park, Pawlings Farm in Valley Forge Park, Reeves Park plus public library in Phoenixville, and Friendship Park in northern Phoenixville.
The meeting place is at GPS coordinates[masked], [masked]. The street address is 987 Port Providence Road, Phoenixville, PA 19460. Some maps have “Port Province Trail Head – Schuylkill River Trail.” There are two parking areas. Meet in the south parking lot, away from the fenced-in dog areas. There are modern facilities at the parking area. Meet at 6:30PM for a start shortly after. The hike will end at approximately 8:45PM.
I will run this hike in almost any weather condition as long as hiking and car travel to the hike is safe. Heavy snow or icy roads may cancel, for instance. I will post weather updates as Meetup comments 90 minutes before the hike as needed. Thanks for keeping your Meetup RSVPs up to date.
This hike is rated 3B6 using the AMC-DV hike rating system with the “3” for brisk pace, “B” for carriage trails (possible sections of well-established flat dirt trails) and “6” for 6-mile length. Expect a brisk walk, but I will adjust some to match the group. There are no real hills and maybe, if everyone agrees, one stream crossing on rocks. The trail is dirt with a few roots/rocks, smooth gravel along the canal and pavement along Towpath road for about 1 mile. For wet or muddy conditions, we walk only on gravel paths or paved roads.
No dogs please.
Hiking shoes are recommended, but sneakers should work. Dress appropriately for weather conditions. As always...please remember to bring water, snacks, first aid kit and other essential items you may need. An umbrella will also work for rainy conditions. You may need a light and should have one just in case.
