Mott Haven is a fascinating, historic neighborhood, with no less than 3 declared historic districts within its boundaries. Although it had fallen on hard times, gentrification is now evident with a number of new luxury apartment complexes going up. It had been the home to many immigrant groups over the years, and we will discuss some of the history during the course of the hike. Among other things we will visit an art gallery as well as the antiques district in the neighborhood. We will end the day with a walk in two beautiful parks adjacent to the Grand Concourse, one with beautiful views overlooking the entire area, and a visit to the Bronx Museum of Arts (free admission). There will be easy access to the subway at the end.
We will hike at a steady, intermediate (not fast, but definitely not slow) pace over a distance of 4 miles. We will not have a formal lunch stop, so please bring snacks to eat along the way. (Per AMC policy, please no dogs, unless indicated otherwise).
Rain or even questionable forecast, as well as unsafe ground conditions from ice or snow, may cancel or modify; check Meetup website for latest updates. To get to the meeting spot, take the 6 train to 3rd Ave. and 138th Street in the Bronx. Exit at Alexander Avenue and 138th Street, and meet in front of the NYPD 40th police precinct at 12:30 PM.
