We begin our urban hike at Main Street and Roosevelt Avenue, the epicenter of Flushing's Chinatown. From there we explore the historic houses and buildings in Flushing, many of them landmarks along the Freedom Mile in the neighborhood. Among other places we will see the 1862 Flushing Town Hall with its craft gallery inside, weeping beech trees, one which was also a living landmark, and the oldest NYC public high school, which evokes images of Oxford and Cambridge in England. After that part of the hike, we walk along Roosevelt Avenue, with a brief stop at the Skyview Center, Flushing's premier shopping destination, to the Boardwalk which takes us into Flushing Meadow Park. We walk along Avenue of the Americas to our final destination, the Queens Museum (contributions suggested; pay whatever you wish). You can get the 7 train nearby at the end.
We will hike at a steady, intermediate (not fast, but definitely not slow) pace over a distance of about 4 miles. We will not stop for lunch so please bring snacks to eat along the way if you wish. (Per AMC policy, please no dogs, unless indicated otherwise).
Rain or even questionable forecast, as well as potentially unsafe ground conditions from ice or snow, may cancel or modify; check Meetup website for latest updates. To get to the meeting spot, take the 7 train to Main Street in Queens. Exit at Main (west side) and Roosevelt Avenue, and meet at McDonalds on 4018 Main Street near Roosevelt Avenue at 1 PM..
