On this urban hike, we walk along the streets of the Belmont neighborhood and Arthur Avenue in the Bronx, in what many call New York's real Little Italy, with its many pastry shops, restaurants and markets. From there we walk cross town to the Hall of Fame for Great Americans, on what was originally the NYU campus, now home to the Bronx Community College, where there are enshrined the Americans who are deemed to have achieved the highest level of excellence. We will see them face-to-face in the busts fashioned by some of the most accomplished sculptors. As an added bonus on this hike we visit the Poe Park Visitor Center Gallery where we meet, and also on the way to Little Italy, we pay a brief visit to the Fordham University Museum of Greek, Etruscan and Roman Art on the campus. Everything is free except for the Italian pastries which you must buy. We end at the number 4 subway train which we can take to our final destination.
We will hike at a steady, intermediate (not fast, but definitely not slow) pace over a distance of 4 miles. We will not be stopping for lunch, so feel free to bring snacks to eat along the way (Per AMC policy, please no dogs, unless indicated otherwise).
Rain or even questionable forecast, as well as potentially unsafe ground conditions from ice or snow, may cancel or modify; check Meetup website for latest updates. To get to the meeting spot, take the D train to Kingsbridge Road in the Bronx, and meet at the Poe Park Visitor Center on 2640 Grand Concourse at 1PM.
