I'm on board to help where I can. Was going to email Jan this weekend but glad she jumped in already.

Jan and Valerie, Great! I will be happy to share my thoughts and will be in town through Labor Day.

It is more difficult than you might imagine to recruit a team. Some paddlers, who said they had a terrific time, seem reluctant to commit for the following year. And, there is the balance of recruiting a couple extra paddlers to cover last minute drop outs but not too many. Nobody wants to sit out.

I do think we did very well last year with two practices and the on shore drills the day of the race. The seat assignments seemed to work well.

There is a discount for early registration. I emailed Jan the info since I had her contact information.

    Thanks!

    Hi Valerie-
I would love to help with getting another team together for this year! Let's get together and plan! :)

    Jeff-
Will you guide us thru the process?

    Can't wait!! :)

    February 20, 2015

  • Valerie

Hey Jan, Hey Abigail are you out there? Would you two be willing to work with me to take up for Jeff? I had already started to scout around for potential paddlers in case we needed some for this year, then read Jeff's email. We did so well in 2014, we can do it this year, too!!

Happy New Year! Thursday February 19 is Chinese New Year, the year of the ram/ goat, and is the most important holiday of the year in China. Tonight there will be fireworks that are incredible.

I want you to know that we are taking an adventure trip to Montana this September and will miss the dragon boat festival in Oshkosh.

I hope someone will take over the lead and enter a team for 2015. It was great fun the last two years.

Look forward to seeing you at our kayak trips this spring and summer.

Good morning, the weather is going to clear before our race. They supply PFDs right before you go on the boat, so you do not need to worry about a PDF on top of rain gear and extra dry clothes.

    September 20, 2014

  • Jason P.

Good luck at the races everyone! Sorry I couldn't join you this time. I had a blast last year, and you will too!

    1 · September 19, 2014

I have an extra PFD for Ting. See ya!

    September 19, 2014

  • Abigail P.

I have sliced apples, a pack of mini Gatorades, and a small veggie tray for snacks. Dont forget extra clothes, towels, and you PFDs!

One more note. The race is at the park by the Leach stage, the address is notes at top of page.

Wrist band reminder. Bring your wrist band or stop at registration desk for one. Shore practice at 8:30 by gazebo. Remember a chair or some plastic covering to sit.

    September 19, 2014

  • Karen

Jeff, I think the guys are going to need to bring their own brightly colored gloves. The gloves I have are smaller women's sizes.

      September 19, 2014

Karen and Greg, thank you. Karen, please bring your gloves to give everyone a second pair of hands to watch for the pace.

      September 19, 2014

  • Jeff D.

    Good morning team,

Key things for Saturday, post #1:

Start. 8:30 Shore practice by gazebo and our tent #36, then line up for race at 8:55. Wrist band. Must wear. Remember your wrist band distributed at the September 5 practice. Or, first go to registration desk, sign waiver, and get a wrist band. The registration desk will be on the south side of the complex by the parking lot. Come early to get your wrist band and join shore practice by 8:30.

Rain. May happen. We will race in the rain, and there may be delays for thunder showers. Bring dry clothes or rain gear and store them in our tent between races. There will be time during lunch, after our second race, to make a trip to your car.

Tent. In section D #36. Our tent is located across from the gazebo, near the river. The tent is for storing stuff and our meeting place during the day. Bring a chair. Does somebody have a canopy to set up during a shower? Last race. About 3:30, if we make the finals.

    September 18, 2014

    • John S.

Jeff, I have a 10x10 canopy that you can use. I'll be down there on Sat to take pictures of you guys and I can bring it then. Or If you want it sooner, let me know. :)

      September 18, 2014

    • Jeff D.

John, please bring it with you. We will tell the other teams that you are a photographer from sports illustrated to take pictures of only us. Thank you.

      1 · September 18, 2014

  • Jeff D.

    Keys for Saturday, post #2.

Line up. Established. We will have our two tallest guys Chad and Greg in the front row, to see their gloved hands for the pace. Our drummer and next three rows are women, to keep the front of the boat light, younger guys will be in the middle for power.

Race format. Well organized. We line up 25 minutes before the race according to row assignments. Then, take a PFD and walk to dock, get in boat by row, paddle to start line and practice a little, line up and start race and paddle in sync for about 80-90 seconds, relax and paddle back to dock and bail out water, exit boat by row and return PFD to the rack. Head back to tent.

5/5/5. Pace of strokes for our start. Then, Greg and Chad will slow the pace a bit for the remainder of the race. We will practice this pace on shore. Being in sync is the key! We will instruct our drummer Ting (from Harbin China) to follow Chad and Greg for the pace.

It will be a fun day and so what if it rains a little!

I'll plan on bringing something to munch on as well. As an FYI, I don't think my friend's wife will be able to join us on Saturday so it'll just be he and I.

    September 17, 2014

  • Jeff D.

Good morning team, I will learn the details about race day on Wednesday night and send an announcement Thursday morning. We will start about 8:00-8:30 with some shore practice before our first race. We will be provided a team tent for storing stuff during the day. I will inform you of the start time and tent location Thursday morning.

Hey everyone! I had a great time at practice on Friday and am looking forward to the races on the 20th. I will be emailing everyone who signed up regarding a few things so keep your eye out. Dont forget your own PFDs for the event as they are probably better fitting than the ones they can provide. And if you have paddling gloves, it may help with grip. I know it will help me. Any questions, email me, or Jeff. And dont forget to encourage friends and family to come and cheer us on!

I will send you a check if you still need us, just tell me where to send it, the price and who to make it out to.

      September 1, 2014

    • Jeff D.

Barb, thank you. We could use you and your friends as back up, in case some people have to drop out at the last minute. So, no need to send a check. There are 21 team members on the boat for a race. It is nice to have a couple people to alternate races but everybody wants to race and not watch.

      September 2, 2014

  • Jeff D.

Reminder: practice this Friday and please come by 6:00 or so to sign forms. Maybe, we can start practice before 6:30 and have more precious daylight.

Be sure to watch the video that Valerie posted below. Remember two points:
    1. Your outside leg is forward with against the inside of the boat and your inside leg is back.

    2. At the start of each stroke, you bend forward and twist your back to the water. Then, you will use your core muscles to paddle.

    See you Friday night.

Thank you Jeff for making the practice arrangements. Here's a link to a great YouTube video for DragonBoat paddling techniques (and there are other good ones on YT) and use of one's core. [copy/paste to address bar]

We had a very fun and productive practice. After some experimentation, we determined that a 5-5-5 start worked best for us, better than 10-10-10. Thanks everybody!

We did well but we need more practice. Please try to make our September 5th practice. We had a good turn out, but everybody but me was a first timer to the team. We need you veterans to make the September 5 practice. We need you veterans to help get us better in sync. Talking to you, Jan! Last year, we practiced, with Jan's lead, on shore being in sync and using our core muscles. The same stuff Matt told us tonight. We need to be in sync for the start.

    See you Friday September 5th.

    Greetings,

Our first practice is next Wednesday August 20 on the Fox in Oshkosh. Please arrive by 6:30 to sign a release form and other administrative stuff.

The practice is on campus by the Environmental research building (ERIC), which is behind the Kolf arena on High Street. One way is to come into campus on High Street (one way street) and turn right on a driveway that is between the new business school building and the Kolf arena. Proceed and park in a gravel parking lot by the ERIC building and walk 20 yards or so to the people by the river. The September 5 practice is at this location, as well.

Dress comfortably. Most of the practice will be on the river. We won't fall in but expect to be splashed a little. The instructor likely will have practice starts several times and practice for everybody to be in sync. It is lots of fun but a workout, too.

Please tell me if you can make it and your preferred t shirt size, if you have not yet responded.

    August 13, 2014

    • Greg

Jeff. I can make both practices and I think I need an xtra large t shirt. Thanx
