As a little girl, Nadia Murad dreamed of opening a beauty salon in her native Iraq. Instead, she survived genocide and sexual slavery at the hands of ISIS. Now in her mid-twenties, she has just won a Nobel Peace Prize for her work on behalf of the Yazidi community—a dizzying array of commitments that runs from testifying before the U.N. Security Council to visiting refugee camps.

Director Alexandria Bombach (Frame by Frame, DFF38) won Sundance’s 2018 Directing Award for her compassionate portrayal of a young woman who is simultaneously driven by her desire to end sexual violence against women and increasingly exhausted by having to endlessly relive her family’s murder and her own rape as a part of her life’s mission. This is the extraordinary story of a woman who persists despite her own pain and remains a source of strength to so many others.
