This will be a great trip for experienced, fit hikers that want to advance
to the next level. Explore a lush desert riparian area just north of the town of Carefree.
This will be a short backpack trip - approx 7 miles each day Saturday and Sunday. We will meet at the US Forest Services Ranger Station at 9:30 Saturday and leave from the Cave Creek trailhead near Seven Springs at 10:00am.
Saturday we will hike the Skunk Tank trail with several ups and downs. We will be going thru the "Quien Sabe" prescribed burn of 1993. They say it takes about 50 years for the area to fully recover from a fire - it still has a ways to go. We will see some great desert vistas and pass by Quien Sabe Spring. The Skunk Tank trail intersects with the Cave Creek Trail near the mouth of a small canyon where we will hike down stream about a mile to our hidden campsite along a gurgling creek. When I last visited this area there were signs of abundant wildlife.
Sunday we will hike up stream through the small canyon passing by a couple of Crescent Saguaros and hike in/along Cave Creek thru a riparian area back to the trail head. Fair amount of flow in Cave Creek but most of us should be able to keep our feet dry.
Need to treat water from Cave Creek.
Most of the elevation change - up & down will be the on the first day (2920' - 4080')
Temps could be in the 30s at nightcampfires OK.
Email me to set up car pools.
Sorry, not a dog friendly trip.
