Need clarification on migrating from staging server to live

One of the things mentioned in the WP401 class at WordCamp is the problem with doing line edits to change the URLs in the database while migrating a site from the staging server (or even local server) to the live server.

Specifically, it was mentioned that problems can occur with plugins when the length of the URLS is different.

So let's say the live server URL is "www.example.com".

In such a case, I would normally have it on my testing server at "www.kelleherwebdesign.com/example/". Or should I add .com before the slash? And does the "www.kelleherwebdesign.com" not make the URL a different length?

What part of the URL needs to be the same length?

Thanks!

....I think what you're looking to do is change the urls of a dev site when pushed to a live/production site with a different url?????????????

Here's the SQL statements I run on a database to change everything.
