Art for the Uninitiated 1: Where It All Began

  • May 31, 2013 · 6:45 PM
  • The National Gallery

in this first thematic tour of the National Gallery collection we will look at the beginnings of European Art - the Middle Ages.
We will find out what was the impulse behind the creation of first panel paintings in the 13th-14th century, look at the life of the artist, studio practices , learn how to identify the egg tempera technique and find out why it gave way to oil technique in the Netherlands. We will see Europe emerge from the dark ages and into a world of faith, colour and discovery.

After the tour we can have a drink and socialise at one of the National Gallery's bars which will be open till 9pm.

Jason - I could hardly say it better - fascinating and informative and brilliantly presented - tantalising, too (I left wanting to know more) - I am so glad I came along and am really looking forward to the Renaissance! Also happy friendly gathering in the bar afterwards - looking forward to that again, as well!

A fascinating and informative introduction to the beginnings of European Art, brilliantly presented by Lydia. Can now appreciate the art from a period that I previously overlooked. Looking forward to the next tour!

It has been indeed, Lydia you managed to make me look with a fresh new eye at the art of the middle age that I used to just ignore. The insights on the techniques and the anecdotes kindled my interest and the time flown by too quickly! Thank you very much I look forward to the 14th!

Thank you Gianluca for coming and bringing a friend. I am sorry you had to rush off to feed him, next time you stay with us!

    Dear All,

thank you all for all the lovely comments and for making the effort to be there. I certainly enjoyed meeting all of you and sharing what I love with you. Many more enjoyable moments to come!

Thank you also to those of you who let me know that you were prevented from making it last night.

To those of you who booked a place but did not turn up and did not let me know, a gentle reminder of how important it is take a moment to update your rsvp , both for your host and your own viability as a group member.

    best wishes
    Lydia

Lots of titbits, ( use of egg yoke affecting colouring to intro of oils) just help get more value out of gallery visits

If you think art is elitist, if you think art history is boring -think again! Lydia makes it totally accessible. Great art, stimulating conversation and best way to start the weekend!
