Timed to coincide with what in normal times would be school half term, when children spend time at home, or on family trips, we give a thought to those children around the world for whom childhoods are disrupted, blighted and destroyed by war, and the work of the Children and War Foundation

In this survey I will demonstrate that while artists were capable of capturing the naturalism and innocence of children, more often than not they chose to represent them through a filter of social or artistic conventions of the day. Children’s portraits and scenes of children at play, tell us a great deal about their place in society and reveal truths about early gender and other social conditioning. Intriguingly - and not unlike today - children sometimes even take on the role of moral messengers, wagging a finger at the folly of grown-ups.

This is the second of a new series is intended to shine a light into those famous and magnificent spaces often made inaccessible by crowds, scaffolding, or more recently - lockdowns.

Known as the" Sistine Chapel" of the early Renaissance, the enormously influential Brancacci Chapel in Florence is in fact the work of three artists: Masolino, Masaccio and Filipino Lippi, who tell the story of St Peter through a revolutionary use of space and light, paving the way to the Renaissance.
(It is also the location where Michelangelo got his nose broken in a fight with another artist.)
