What we're about

New to the DIY/do-it-yourself/build-it-yourself artificial pancreas? Wondering how to get the most you can from it?

Due to mainly online support for these amazing tools, we formed an in-person resource group. You can participate online (as with other forums), or meet your fellow T1s in person!

Our group now covers both the LOOP and the OpenAPS closed loop systems. The group is for people who are currently using a system, in-process of building, or interested in getting started. All T1s, parents of T1s, significant others, friends and T1 supporters are welcome.

Our meetings:

Come meet others in-person with similar interests together with a wealth of experience. We’re a self-organized group of individuals wanting hands-on, live interaction about DIY artificial pancreas systems.

We hold meeting in both the south bay (San Jose) and east bay (Walnut Creek). See the event schedule for dates & times.

Why DIY? It's infinitely more flexible, responsive, and has rave reviews from those who dare. A note, a few people currently have a commercially available AP but are switching to the DIY system. If this is you, this group is also for you.

Our group leverages our real-world experiences using DIY artificial pancreas systems, and discusses techniques we use to maintain or improve our blood sugars and free up our lives. We aim to leverage our collective knowledge; supplement the online forums that exist; create a searchable database or documents; and share this with our group and the greater DIY community. There is also a growing number of tools/apps that can be used with DIY artificial pancreas systems to manage diabetes, and we explore these too.

Citizen science is a powerful tool. Together we have "swarm intelligence" that is created by ordinary people, each with pieces of knowledge, pooling their resources-- similar to how bees survive and promote their hive. Not only is this knowledge unavailable in the traditional healthcare system, but we as users often get the results first. That is invaluable for managing T1.

BUILD PARTY ! ! !

ActionSpot

Due to popular request, we will be holding a DIY Build Party on May 4th. Come and join the party and build your own Artificial Pancreas. This is an open source system that uses your CGM, your pump, and your iPhone. You add the "RileyLink" and algorithm to your phone. The party will be a celebration of our ability to build our own systems. Such a rad concept!! We'll be sharing and exchanging tribal knowledge, information, tips & tricks, as well as how-tos anf gotchas to avoid. Lots of people will be happy, and happy to help you. Who should attend? - Those who have been trying to build already, and want help from others - Those who have their equipment, but haven't started yet - Those who want to update their existing system - Those who are planning on getting their equipment in time for the party - Those who are thinking about building and want to see it happen Things you'll want or need for the party: 1. iPHONE with updated operating system (see LOOPdocs) 2. RILEYLINK. Note there are different versions, depending on whether you'll build with Medtronic or Omnipod. There is a specific RileyLink option if you are unsure and may be switching between Omnipod and Medtronic. Check Facebook group for thread on this discussion. In general, a RileyLink can be bought online for $150. 3. PUMP. see LOOPdocs for usable Medtronic models. 4. MAC LAPTOP. If you don't have a mac, there should be extras for sharing. 5. APPLE WATCH is optional. You can always add it later if you choose. 6. OPTIMISM Please read the LOOPdocs about the system before the party. This will prepare you to build and potentially go "green" at the party. One of the things you'll need to decide is when to fully close the loop on your system-- the party is a great place to find out when/how others got to this point. LOOPdocs: https://loopkit.github.io/loopdocs/ LOOP is a self-built, self-supported system so you need to be aware of this. It helps to be connected to a network of people who have the same issues and questions. T1s, significant others, T1 supporters, and kids welcome. There is an entrance to ActionSpot on San Carlos St, and one in the back of the building, IF the Mr. Rooter gate is open. PARKING: You can park on the street or, if the gate is open there may be space in the back of the building (you'll see Mr. Rooter trucks). Note the regularly scheduled meeting on the 4th week in April is canceled. 2019 Meeting Locations: Jan - Walnut Creek Feb - San Jose Mar - Walnut Creek Apr - no meeting ***** May - SAN JOSE ***** June - San Jose July - Walnut Creek Aug - San Jose Sep - Walnut Creek Oct - San Jose Nov - Walnut Creek Dec - tbd. #WeAreNotWaiting

ActionSpot

We've adjusted our topic/format and now include both LOOP and OpenAPS artificial pancreas systems-- both are part of the Do-It-Yourself movement. Come if you are using one already, are in the process of building, or are interested in finding out more. Some people report they don't watch blood sugars anymore, after having a LOOP artificial pancreas-- it runs itself. Bring your significant other, friend, or mom/dad. There is an entrance to ActionSpot on San Carlos St, and one in the back of the building. PARKING: You can park on the street or in the back of the building (you'll see Roto-Rooter trucks). 2019 Meeting Locations: Jan - Walnut Creek Feb - San Jose Mar - Walnut Creek Apr - San Jose May - Walnut Creek ***** JUNE - SAN JOSE ***** July - Walnut Creek Aug - San Jose Sep - Walnut Creek Oct - San Jose Nov - Walnut Creek Dec - tbd. #WeAreNotWaiting
