About the Thanet Coastline

The Isle of Thanet is ancient land, believed to get its name from the Phoenician Goddess Tanit. It has beautiful scenery and lovely beaches. It has been showered with European Blue Flag awards, getting 7 out of 9 awards for Kent. It has also received 12 Seaside Resort Awards.

We will be staying in the historic village of Birchington On Sea.

The Isle of Thanet is where the Vikings first landed in Britain in 449 AD, and we will be walking along some of the most beautiful sections of the 27+ mile Viking Coastal Trail.

About Thanet's Artists and Writers

Thanet has held a fascination for artists and writers including Vincent van Gogh, who taught here. Turner, Britain's best known painter, was inspired to paint by the area.

He remarked that "the skies over Thanet are the loveliest in all of Europe".

Charles Dickens, who spent many of his summers by Broadstairs, was also inspired by the area, and wrote some of his classic's here. Many of his well known and loved characters are based on local people that he knew in the area.

The Walks/Hikes

The walks will be gentle, along the beautiful Viking coastal trail. You can decide how much you want to walk. The maximum would be around 10 miles a day.

It is suggested that if the weather is good, we stay outdoors during the day, and relax and enjoy the yoga and health facilities of Rossetti Lodge in the morning and evenings.

Example's of walks would be:

Walk to Margate (Saturday)

An easy, scenic walk passing many famous bays and blue flag beaches to reach the old resort town of Margate. Margate is the traditional English seaside resort, which has been neglected due to the trend in overseas package holidays.

It is, however, making a revival and has been tipped as one of the top 10 places in the world to visit in 2013 by the Rough Guide's Annual Travel Hotlist.

The Rough Guide cited recent developments such as the Turner Contemporary Art Gallery, and the town's “indie art spaces”, “vintage shops” and “cute cafés”, which can be explored if there is time during our walks.

Those that prefer can continue to walk to the famous resort of Broadstairs, the seaside home of Charles Dickens. After spending the remainder of the day exploring Birchington, you can take the train back to Birchington, which costs around £4.

Walk to Reculver (Sunday)

A lovely walk along the sea, passing the lovely Minnis Bay, then continue to the Roman Fort at Reculver.

Those that prefer can continue to walk to Herne Bay. You can then walk back or if time is short, you can take the train back, which costs around £4.

Rossetti Lodge Health Spa

About your stay

You will stay at Rossetti Lodge Health Spa, a space designed for body and soul escapes. It was built pre 1910 for a Reverend and has been used for health care and recuperation since. Birchington's All Saints' church is the burial place of the 19th century Pre-Raphaelite artist, Dante Gabriel Rossetti.

About Yoga

Yoga is spiritual practice that leads to union with the divine. This happens when the ego is dropped and thinking mind is allowed to relax, allowing the inner awareness to shine forth. We explore a wide and inclusive range of Yoga forms and Meditations to reach this goal.

About Yoga Spaces

Our Yoga spaces are designed to provide a space to teach and a space for you to explore, practice and enjoy yogic bodywork at your own pace, to suit your flexibility, body weight and fitness levels.

There is the main Dojo Space with Aikido mats. A second yoga space has hammocks for aerial/anti-gravity yoga, and there is a smaller workshop space, also with soft aikido mats. There is also a sauna/steam area.

On sunny days, we could also do outdoor yoga by the sea.

We will have have guided yoga sessions/workshops followed by group and individual practice sessions, depending on the time available. We also have easy to follow Yoga Charts so that you can practice yoga at your own individual level.

About the Aikido Mats

Aikido mats are thick and firm but softer and nicer then yoga mats for the body. They allow for more flexibility and movement during your sessions.

About Anti-Gravity Yoga

Anti-gravity yoga is easy, fun and therapeutic. It is now being taken up in this country by many, including celebrities like Geri Harriwell. It was recently demonstrated on the Alan Titchmarsh programme and on Loose Women.

Those that want to try it will be shown how to do it and will have ample opportunities to practice and enjoy. It is completely optional and you can stay on the mat if you prefer.

About Relaxation, Silence and Healing

We encourage relaxation, silence and silent communication at our yoga retreats. The two work together: silence relaxes the mind, helping us to get into our bodies, into our breath, helping us to feel and become more alive, to become more aware.

Talking builds stress, dissipates your life energy, activates the brain, puts you and other people in the head. Talking also builds and re-enforces the ego. The spiritual journey only begins when the Ego is dropped.

Relaxation allows the mind to rest so that your body can heal itself and you can enjoy peace and tranquillity.

At the retreat space there is the sound of the waves, the sound of birds singing, sounds that will help uplift your spirits and heal you. There is also the smell of fresh seaside air with its potent chi for our inner healing energy work.

There will be Sufi, Hindi and Tibetan Chanting and Mantras, There maybe lots of laughter and hugs!


The weekend costs just £150 per person. It includes:

• 2 Nights accommodation in shared rooms

• Yoga sessions and walks/hikes

• Meals.

Transportation costs are not included



6 pm onwards: Arrival

6.30 pm: Dinner, dishes + short walk along the sea

8:30 pm: Opening Circle + Workshop


8 am - 9 am: Yoga

9.15 am: Breakfast

10 am: Set off for walk/hike

4:00 pm: Return to Lodge

4:30 pm: Tea and Relax

6 pm - 7 pm: Yoga session

7.30 pm: Dinner

9:00 pm: Sauna


8 am 9 am : Yoga session

9.15 am: Breakfast

10:00 am: Set off for walk/hike

12:00 pm: Return to Lodge

Shared House Care

There will be some shared house care, such as helping with food preparation and cleaning up.


1. Trains

The Lodge is a short walk from Birchington train station, with its regular fast trains to London Victoria and Kings Cross/St Pancras. Cost £35, time around 1:40 mins.

2. Buses

There are regular National Express buses from Victoria. Cost £15 each way, time around 2 hours.

3. By Car and car share

It is about an hour and half's drive from London.
