Obregon_FM Gorman

This is my last round game in the recent Northern Virginia Open. FM Gorman had the black pieces and played the Sicilian. After some middlegame action, the match ended with a drawn rook-and-pawns ending.

The game was played in the last round of the Carver Tournament. It features the popular & sharp Najdorf variation for Sicilian lovers. White held on to his initiative from the opening phase and reached a winning endgame despite Black's resistance.

In round 4 of the Carver tournament, I played Black against Master Raymond. In a tough Semi-Slav game, the position remained relatively equal until the queens were exchanged. And until the last move, Black's slight edge was not easy to exploit.

This game followed a Winawer line, a popular choice by French Defense players. The game shows how one mistake (...g6) can lead to a quick downfall. The Kingside attack was relentless and a knight maneuver leading to mate provided the climax.

Raymond Duchesne-Scott Knoke_8-15-09

My game from Raymond's simul 8-15-09, now with annotations by Raymond as well as a suggestion from Shawn. White castled long and engineered a strong attack. Black had chances, too, but played some weak moves towards the end. Comments welcome!

DiBeneditto-vs-Hayden - 08152009

As requested by Herky, here is the game played between Matt and I at today's session. The opening was a Sicilian where White plays Qxd4. A tough battle over 60 moves. I've added a few brief comments and would welcome any feedback on the game.

Another game against RaymondD. White invades Blacks position through the center, gets a Q and R on the 7th rank and even promotes a pawn. Black somehow survives and counterattacks leading to tripled isolated pawns trapping the White king.

Victor and I discussed the Grand Prix Attack (GPA) against the Sicilian today - quite different to mainstream lines. Attached is a recent game I played against RaymondD in a far from typical variation in the GPA. Some general notes are in the file.

In the recent Kingstowne Tournament, club founder Charles Frey played Black against Alex Passov who was the tournament favorite. It was a closed Sicilian which culminated in a won pawn endgame by Charles. Frey went on to win the tournament!

In my first USCF tournament, I played against Fiona Lam who was rated 1770 then. This was a memorable game because this enabled me to garner the top unrated honors in the Northern Virginia Open '08. What a great tournament experience!
