Announcing a new Meetup for Asheville Skeptics!

What: Asheville Skeptics: Hey baby.. what?s your sign?

When: November 18,[masked]:30 PM

13 W Walnut St
Asheville, NC 28803

If you?re old enough to remember this pick up line then you were probably of the generation that harvested its moves from the scripts of Three?s Company. There was a time when a leisure suit, white belt, and fancy Chrysler Cordoba was essential for doing well with the ladies. Also, it was essential to have a conversational knowledge of where Venus was in relation to Mercury and if Sagittarius was rising or just lying there. Concurrent with this esthetic of coke spoons and disco was the widespread belief in astrology.

For many, the belief in the jelly-brained woo-woo that the alignment of the planets at your birth influences your future life persists. Indeed, our local paper continues to promote this ridiculous belief (try and get them to say anything about atheists). Astrology remains one of the most mainstream wack-a-loon practices out there and I?d like some answers why. The predictive value is easily debunked; so why the longevity?
Is this rooted in its ancient value as a pick up line?

I?m up for some November skepticism at Scully?s this Wednesday night. The upcoming holidays are ripe for skeptical inquiry other than the astrological kind as well: from JFK assassination conspiracies to standing on the sidelines and spectating on the War On Christmas, there is plenty of fun to be had.
