"Good Beyond Belief". Yes, it's possible.

Hi all,

As you all know, I feel quite strongly about the fact that people who are not religious or "spiritual" are often perceived by society as being uncaring and morally lacking. A part of the problem is that, firstly, so many avenues by which one can express ones social concern and social activism are "faith-based". Another part of the problem is that us "non-religious" people, lacking an avenue that is already organized for us, often simply don't have the time or energy to get up and organize some such initiative.

So .... this year, I am taking part in the American Cancer Society Relay For Life. I have registered a team, with the team name "Good Beyond Belief". Im hoping you will get involved in some way.

I'm making it easy for you; as Team Captain I'm going to be doing most of the actual work involved in sending out emails, checking on the progress of the teams fundraising, organising an event or two, planning the "Good Beyond Belief" team tent for the actual Relay For Life (which is on the 4th June at 6pm here in Asheville) ....

.... and you can get involved the Easy Way or the Hard Way.  The easy way is to simply donate money to our team "Good Beyond Belief". I'll be blunt; the main point is to raise money for the American Cancer Society to do all the wonderful things they do. So never underestimate the affect of simply writing a check (and making sure to credit your donation to team "Good Beyond Belief" ... so that us "non-religious" members of the community can get recognition as being caring, involved, supportive members of our community). There is a link below that you can click on that will guide you through making an online donation to our team.

The Hard Way is to become a team member of team "Good Beyond Belief". If you get involved this way, there will be two main things expected of you; firstly, you will need to go out there and try to get donations from other people ... friends / family / co-workers. You don't have to raise huge amounts of money at all (one of the aims in doing this is to show the broader community that non religious people are ethical and caring too, so simply being prepared to get involved is a good thing. In addition, I'm not too keen on the "hard-sell" approach. I don't like pressurising people and I know most of you don't either!). The second thing expected of you will be to be involved in the actual relay itself, which will take place on Friday night, 4th June from 6pm until 6am Saturday morning. (Note: there will be no running involved or anything else of an excessive physical nature! Us nontheists are decent human beings, but we're not all triathletes!). This event sounds like an incredible experience. I don't think it will be an "onerous" thing to be involved at all; I think it will be a quite remarkable evening that those of use who participate in will remember as significant for a long time to come. It'll also be a huge amount of fun!!

So .... either make a nice donation to the American Cancer Society in the name of team "Good Beyond Belief" or email me about becoming a team member. I'm very excited about this. I think this will be a great opportunity to do something worthwhile whilst showing others that we are fantastic people as well.

From this point onwards in this email is some more info about the American Cancer Society and Relay for Life that they sent me in a form letter, PLUS the all important "Donate Button"  :-)

The American Cancer Society Relay For Life is a life-changing event that gives people across the globe a chance to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease. At Relay, teams of people camp out at a local high school, park, or fairground and take turns walking or running around a track or path. Each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the event, because cancer never sleeps.

Relay For Life helps raise much-needed funds and awareness to help the American Cancer Society save lives from cancer and create more birthdays.

Please support me in my efforts by visiting my personal web page to make a secure, tax-deductible online donation.

RFL FY10 BP - Donate Btn

Every donation really does make a difference. I know that times are tighter than normal for many of us, but any amount you can give truly can help save lives.

You see, thanks to your support, the American Cancer Society can:

  • Help people stay well by helping them take steps to prevent cancer or detect it early, when its most treatable
  • Help people get well by being in their corner around the clock to guide them through every step of their cancer experience
  • Find cures by funding groundbreaking research that helps us understand cancers causes, determine how best to prevent it, and discover new ways to cure it
  • Fight back by working with lawmakers to pass laws to defeat cancer and rally communities worldwide to join the fight

Each of us has our own reasons for caring about the fight against cancer whatever your reasons, I hope youll choose to make a difference by making a donation online to support my efforts. Im so grateful to have great people like you in my life who want to see an end to cancer in our lifetime. Together we can save lives.

Thank you, and I will keep you updated on my progress.
