Protest Ringling Bros. in Asheville

The circus is coming to town! But unfortunately, Ringling -- like so many -- uses and abuses animals in the name of entertainment. Check out RinglingBeatsAnimals.com for more background.

So come one, come all ... animal lovers! We will hold civil protests at each of the seven shows; come to one or many. We will have signs to hold and leaflets & children's activity books to distribute. Let's inform Asheville's citizens and government about animal circuses. Change is incremental but exponential as well. It all starts with our courage to be the voice for the voiceless.

Consider attending any of these protests:
Thursday, May 9, 11:45am-1pm for the press and 6-7pm
Friday, May 10, 6-7pm
Saturday, May 11, 10-11am, 2-3pm, and 6-7pm
Sunday, May 12, 12-1pm and 4-5pm

Please also check out this tip sheet for activists; we want to make a good impression, let the public know that we are serious, and stay out of legal trouble. http://www.mediapeta.com/peta/PDF/tips_for_PETA_activists.pdf

Thank you all so much for your interest and your hearts!

While RSVP is not required, we are coordinating/ ensuring at least 2 people attend each demonstration and designating 1 person serve as the go-to organizer (for potential police and/or press communication) for each time slot.  Please sign up here: www.SignUpGenius.com/go/20F0A45A9AF23A75-ringling

I am so honored to have been a part of these protests! I believe we reached quite a few children who will have these images in their minds as they grow older so they can make the right decision for themselves and their families. And we also reached a certain percentage of the parents which is great! I will not stop until the day a circus involving animals of any kind still exist. :)

This was my first protest! So relieved that 22 folks showed up for Thursday evening and they had big signs with great photos and material to hand out. Feel like we reached a lot of young minds and a few adults who questioned why they were going to the circus Protesting the circus and the treatment of animals has been on my bucket list since age five. I am now 49! Finally.

I just spoke with the Asheville Deputy Police Chief (Kelly Whitlock received my message and asked him to call me)- he told me he has no issues with demonstrators handing out informational materials, and he'll be talking with all of the officers who may be there this weekend to let them know.

He asked that no protesters start confrontations or try and force materials on circus-goers, and I assured him that the demos would be very peaceful and let him know the organizers appreciate how accommodating the police have been.

Protesters, bring your rain gear on Saturday! Looks like scattered showers or thunderstorms on & off all day.

I may be able to do this on Thursday. If so, would anyone be interested in having their faces painted like animals? I am a professional face painter and would paint for free for this cause. This was just an idea I had and I wanted to throw it out there.

What time should we get there if we want to take part in the face painting and where is a good place to park for this?

I will not be facepainting as I was just told that it violates rules. If I had more time, I would invite everyone to my apartment and face paint there, as it would not be violating any rules, and then people would be free to choose to go to a protest with face paint on if they like. I had no idea that painting before the protest or at the protest could cause repercussions. My apologies.

OK just looked at the schedule. I thought there was a early show on Thursday. Civic Center shows nothing. What is up Thursday Morning?

    May 8, 2013

    • Rosemary

The early Thursday event is for press coverage. They are much more likely to show up during the day.

I am going to try to get two of my daughters there Thursday morning! I'll probably show up for at least one of the weekend shows.

I will definitely be there on Thursday! Wish I could come other nights but it is my only night off. Love the face painting idea I would be thrilled to be a part of that if we do it!

Is this an Asheville event or a PETA event?

    April 30, 2013

    • Rosemary

The materials PETA produces for children are excellent, and go like hotcakes.

Just moved to the area. Who is the contact person for coordinating the protest and exactly where at the address is the group meeting? There's a good chance I will be in town Thursday-Saturday and could join Thursday evening or Friday evening or Saturday.
