Special Event : The Annual Trip to the Hay on Wye Literary Festival

The Hay Festival is the biggest and the most popular literary festival in the world. It has been running for 25 years and anybody who is anybody in the literary world is there, or precisely any author who has published a successful book in the last 12 months is there.

The Asian book-club has organized a trip this festival for the past 4 years and it has been a treat every year. This year is most likely to be the last year of the trips to the festival.

The number of people for this trip will be limited to 16.

What happens at this festival?

The festival is in a large open field, where more than 10 large marquees are set up, the marquee's have a  capacity of between[masked] people.  There is a book talk, interview, lecture,  panel discussion, film or an entertainment show in each marquee every hour, that is there are at least 10 events going on at the same time, you are spoiled for choice.  The tickets for each event are between £5-£15.

While we travel as a group, at the festival each person does their own thing, meeting frequently between the events to discuss what they have heard and seen.

Hay-on-Wye the place which hosts this festival is a small cobble-stoned village where every second shop is a book shop, it is a haven for book lovers, so when you get tired of listening to people, you can wander off to this quaint little village.

 Dates and Times.

The trip will be over the bank holiday weekend in May from the Saturday 25th to Monday the 27th . We start from London around 8am on Saturday to get to Festival by 1pm. The festivals events go on till around 11:00pm every day and start around 10:00am each morning.

We start back from Hay-on-Wye late on Monday afternoon to get back to London around 9-10pm. London.

Tickets

The full programme will be released over Easter , most of the popular events get sold out very quickly so it is best to book the ones that really appeal to you well in advance. However when you are there you can still get tickets for many of the events. So the best option is to book some events in advance, and leave some for a spontaneous decision when you are there.

Many thanks to Vineet for organising a memorable trip. Whilst it must be hard enough to organise hotels, cars, dinners etc. I am completely baffled as to how he managed to organise the weather. I had a great time :-)

The Programme for the festival has now been released. You can see it on their website.

    https://www.hayfestival.com/m-76-hay-festival-2013.aspx

Tickets are open to the public, anyone can book these on the website.

The general practice is to book a few events before you go and leave some to decide on the day. The popular ones to get booked out pretty quick, so if you really want to see something or listen to someone it is better to book.

While you are there you should also check out the philosophy festival. as well that has an interesting programme as well http://howthelightgetsin.org/2013-programme/event-tickets/all-sessions/

Sorry Malcolm has confirmed as well. That leaves 2 rooms.

  • Vineet

The confirmed attendees for this festival are Vineet, Malvinder, Vijay, Rina, Neetha, Julia, Sonia, Nash, Franziska. With Neetha, Julia and Sonia happy with a shared room, every one else prefers single. This leaves only 3 rooms spare at the moment. To confirm your attendance you need to send me an email with details requested (Including people on the waiting list). I will wait till the 16th March and then the RSVPs will be closed. At that stage I will try to source more rooms(if required) and confirm how many people can be accomodated. Payment of the deposit will be following this confirmation. We also have 3 car drivers happy to take their cars (Vineet, Vijay and Nash) plus Malvinder happy to drive a rented car, Neetha can take her car if we twist her arm. So transport should get sorted.
