First Annual ACSJ Picnic!

Join the ACSJ for a family friendly atheist afternoon in the park. This year's venue will be Vasona Park in Los Gatos - and we'll be doing it potluck style, so it should be lots of fun!

Our spot is Gateway Pavilion Group Area. It's the first picnic area on the right after you enter the park. (lower right corner) See map. The site includes shaded picnic tables and a large BBQ grill.

As it will be a potluck style picnic, please state in the comments what you plan on bringing, and it will be added to the main list below. This list will be updated often to reflect additions and changes. Also please bring serving utensils for your own dish. If your item needs to stay cool or hot, please plan to bring items to manage that, such as a cooler with ice. Plates, cups, eating utensils, and napkins will be provided.

Also of note, there is a $6 entrance fee per vehicle to the park, so carpool if you can!

For more details about Vasona Park, see here.

We look forward to spending the afternoon with you and your family!

  • Larry G.

I'm looking forward to the second annual! A very enjoyable get-together.

    4 · August 4, 2014

  • Tim

So much fun. Some of the conversations were boarder-line psychotic and so hilarious. The roasted babies were delicious.

    6 · August 4, 2014

  • Jim L.

Great time, great location, great people, great food, great job organizing and making this happen. Completely agree to make this an annual thing.

    4 · August 3, 2014

    • Werner H.

Everything was great. My only comment is that our group has very few families with kids. Hopefully we will grow in that direction eventually.

      2 · August 3, 2014

    • Brian B.

You are right Werner, we don't have much to offer kids right now. Churches always have programs (like VBS) and child care during events. It will take some time, but we will grow into that. Right now we are building the foundation and it is going well.

      4 · August 4, 2014

  • Werner H.

On the drive home there was something on NPR about a writer writing a story about how atheists have no community groups to be involved with, and I'm thinking "Nope, you're wrong."

    6 · August 3, 2014

  • Invisible Pink U.

Great folks, great food, great drinks and a great time. Thanks to all who helped with making this event a success.

    4 · August 3, 2014

Great supportive community. Perfect resource to counter those the feel we all should be believers.

    3 · August 3, 2014

  • Brian B.

Thank you all for coming and having a great time with your fellow atheists! Days like these remind me of why this is so important and why our community is growing. See you all next time, let's keep it going! We have so much cool stuff coming up.

Not working Wed nights anymore so I can make said events!

      4 · August 3, 2014

    August 3, 2014

  • Thomas P. H.

I'll bring an archery set, lawn darts, and plenty of bottle rockets.

    1 · August 2, 2014

I thought bottle rockets are illegal in California (without a permit.)

      1 · August 2, 2014

    • Jason G.

      Lawn darts, yes!

      August 3, 2014

  • Kim

    Look for me noonish.

    August 3, 2014

  • Jim L.

Actually thinking we are a bit heavy on dessert and not enough entree type food so I may switch to bring some sandwich stuff.

    July 18, 2014

    • Kevin H.

Lyn, remove the Bloody Mary's from the list since the parks don't allow it. I'll still bring the deviled eggs.

      July 31, 2014

    • Kim

Sorry I never answered, Lyn. I took off for a long family vaca (without wifi!) in New York. Yes I'll bring everything!

      August 3, 2014

  • Larry G.

I have DP plates on my car. Where can I meet up with others who can share parking with me? Is there a store nearby where you could safely leave your car. I'm told DP plates park free at Vasona Park, so if you can park and ride with me, I'll pick you up. I just don't know where.

    July 28, 2014

    • Larry G.

What time? I'm guessing around 10:45? I'll meet you there. Anybody else needing to carpool, I'm in a red Hyundai that hasn't been washed in a while! I'm going to clean out the inside RIGHT NOW!

      August 2, 2014

    • Noreen

      10:45 is perfect.

      August 2, 2014

      August 2, 2014

I'll bring a few pounds of lamb sausages I made some weeks ago (they've been frozen since they were made). I promise they're delicious.

    • Kim

      yum!!!

      August 2, 2014

  • Chuck B.

just to confirm we are all arriving at 11am with food ready to go right? Eat at lunch before anything goes bad or gets spoiled.

    July 31, 2014

    • Jim L.

Proper handling and preparation will greatly reduce the chance of any food borne illness from affecting anyone. Yes mayonnaise based products and other touchy items like meat and cheese may become unsafe to eat after several hours, but we should be fine. Oh and Brian I like any plan that includes 6 straight hours of eating... ;-D

      August 1, 2014

    • Noreen

Commercial mayonnaise contains no raw eggs. In fact it doesn't even need refrigeration. More food safety lore (and facts) here. http://www.snopes.com...

      August 1, 2014

  • Elena

We'll bring some pizza and maybe a cake

    August 1, 2014

  • Kevin H.

Since we can't bring hard liquor into the park I'll just bring Bloody Mary mix (spicy tomato juice) instead and some beer.

    1 · July 31, 2014

  • Werner H.

Beside food, I'm bringing frisbees. I also have a set of horseshoes. Are we near any horseshoe pits?

    1 · July 22, 2014

    • Kevin H.

Werner, I was there today and there is not a horseshoe pit but there is a dirt area where we could set up one.

I'm bringing my guitar! Be prepared to sing!

    4 · July 2, 2014

Not during the concert, no -- but then, he doesn't name most of his songs as he sings them. I am confident that the title of the song is"Nothing Can Stop Us Now". Now you know. BTW, I'm a reference fanatic; going to the mat with me on these things when I'm sure is a bad bet. Just saying. http://en.wikipedia.o...) . Incidentally, he says "We've got" approximately as often as "We got" during `the song, though I haven't counted -- I can if you think it's important.

FYI ... the city of Los Gatos does not permit hard spirits in parks. Only wine and beer are permitted. That being said, please drink in an objectively responsible manner (regardless of ones perceived, often fallacious, and subjective "tolerance" towards alcohol), or alternatively consider a designated driver.

    1 · July 25, 2014

  • Invisible Pink U.

It looks like a great selection of good food & drinks will be there. If anyone can think of any foods, drinks, supplies, games, etc. which haven't yet been mentioned, please list them here - and we'll try to find volunteers for those items.

    July 22, 2014

  • Jim W

For the kiddies there is a carousel and the Billy Jones Wild Cat Railroad at the park next door. It runs through this one as well and it's cheap.

    July 20, 2014

  • Chuck B.

Please keep food safety in mind as you think about eggs meats and dairy. Foods have to be kept very cold and not sat out for more than an hour or so above 34 degrees. There are some great tips on picnic food safety on the net also. We vegans in the group get more time to enjoy veggie trays before they'd go south (and guilt free).

    July 16, 2014

    • Jim L.

First off, the actual food danger zone is 45-140. Most refrigerators don't keep food at 34 degrees, so that's an extreme temperature actually called a deep chiller and reserved for especially touchy items that are high cost like vegetables but it's more to keep them fresh than to keep them safe.

Most picnic food is fairly safe if it's prepared properly. The risk normally comes from cross contamination or improper pre-cooking. When grilling foods people often forget to pay enough attention to the chicken and make sure it's done.

      July 18, 2014

    • Larry G.

The hamburger in the Spanish rice dish I'm bringing will be well browned, because I'm fussy that way. It would not be undercooked. I feel sure that it will be safe even if it's cooled off. I've done this before with no problems.

      July 19, 2014

  • Larry G.

I'm looking for a recipe for a vegan dish, but most either have cheese or a tofu substitute. Not a problem for everyone, but I think at least one person told me she's allergic to soy. What to do? Any suggestions?

    July 18, 2014

    • Larry G.

Kennita, I'm surprised not more people know about the crunchy Jicama. It adds both flavor and tooth to a salad.

      July 18, 2014

    • Kennita

Point taken. The data in this particular article came from 6 different sources, so I imagine some of it is right, and as my mom used to say, even a broken clock is right twice a day (I guess that's once a day now that people use 24-hour clocks :-) ).

      1 · July 18, 2014

  • Larry G.

Yes, Lynn, put me down for the Spanish rice (with meat) and a green salad with tomatoes and Jicama, and (if they look good) maybe some avocado. I'll bring some dressing, too, probably ranch and oil/vinegar.

I wanted to do some food (like deviled eggs!) but will be returning to town the night before and don't think I can pull it off.

      July 17, 2014

    • Lyn C

Don't worry about it, Kim! Sodas and wine will be greatly appreciated, especially if the sodas comes with an icy cooler. And don't forget the bottle opener! :) As for other easy items... that's what cheese, deli and cracker platters are for, right? Also grapes, (cuties) clementines, blueberries, and raspberries.

      July 17, 2014

  • Emily

Just a small request to those bringing food, if it is all possible, please bring a list of ingredients in your dish. I have a wheat allergy and I'm sure others may have dietary restrictions. This will alleviate the annoying questions that would cause me normally to avoid such events but I'm tired of missing out. : )

Gluten has become a kind of buzzword for non-celiac people, as well as those, like my brother Jim, who do have it. I had a blood test that eliminated me, but my bro had had a negative blood test, too. Celiac disease wasn't discovered until they used a nasoscope on him and actually saw the damaged cilia. I suppose it's possible that I have it, too, as it tends to run in families. But it was just too damned much trouble for me to keep to the gluten free diet. You are right, though, that real disorders often become fads, and many people are treated who don't need to be. I wish there were better studies.

As for your being big and scary, well, yeah. But all who know you know you're really a pussycat! ;^)
