"They were looking for a kind of adventure. They wanted to live on a Polynesian island but they didn't have sufficient expertise to navigate adequately," "
They aimed for Polynesia and wound up a few thousand miles off the coast of Chile. It's amazing that people would endanger their children so severely. Those kids are not safe with these parents.
Susan,
The true danger to their children is their bigoted, narrow minded world view. The kids might have been better off drowning than to be indoctrinated into a faith like this:
"Hannah Gastonguay said her family was fed up with government control in the U.S. As Christians they don't believe in "abortion, homosexuality, in the state-controlled church," she said.

U.S. "churches aren't their own," Gastonguay said, suggesting that government regulation interfered with religious independence.
Among other differences, she said they had a problem with being "forced to pay these taxes that pay for abortions we don't agree with." While federal law bars public funding for abortion, state attempts to block Medicaid funding for organizations that provide the procedure have met with legal hurdles. Opponents say that funding allows those groups to perform abortions.
The Gastonguays weren't members of any church, and Hannah Gastonguay said their faith came from reading the Bible and through prayer.
"The Bible is pretty clear," she said.

The bible is pretty clear? Really? That's news to me... They just want the right to interfere with other peoples reproductive rights and to persecute homosexuals at their leisure. They are angry that they can't be bigots and control freaks in the U.S.. Well, I wish all like them could be sent to a remote island. Maybe America could get on with progress if that were the case.

Wow! It appears Jesus did descend from a common ancestor with apes after all, or someone is a really bad artist. You choose...

Are atheists smarter? I don't think so, but it's interesting to think about why it might appear to be so.

I am old enough to remember when they changed the pledge and added the words “under God”. It bothered me a lot; but an eight year old kid does not think they have any rights and we knuckle under easily. It was not until decades later that I heard about how our cold war with Russia was behind the push to distinguish us from their atheist government. If the U.S.S.R. was going in one direction we had to go in the other; whether it made sense or not.

This isn't necessarily in the news, but I wanted to post it here because it is in itself, crazy.
