I forgot to add that the clear majority of atheists protest to fight for "our" rights (a good example is when fundies get control of a local school board and force their religion onto "our" kids).. ?I have been to many protests in the last 15 years,a nd most of the protest signs are on topic (directed at the separation of church and state issue; rather than putting doe\wn religion).. ?So I speak from experience when the media takes the one (or few) hateful signs and uses that to represent the group (out of context)..?

This is just another hurdle atheists have to jump thru.. Atheists are the most hated minority in America (and the media likes to fan the fire).. Even during the height of hating muslims (after 911), the clear majority of parents would rather their daughter marry a muslim than an atheist..?

I agree there is a place, and a need for atheists the have groups for purely social reasons.. Because we need a vibrant atheist community if we are ever to truly be able to fight for our rights.. ?All I ask is that atheist activists get support from the wings.. ?In fighting among ourselves is by far trhe biggest weakness we atheists have.. ?

Hi Shane,

There are lots of religious nuts who call themselves atheists; I suspect you met one of them.. ?It also seems there are lots of fundies who claim to have once been an atheist.. ?Of hundreds of atheists I have known over the years, many of them used to be fundies, but it never goes the other way in my experience (of all the atheists I know, someone would have heard about one of us going fundy).. ?

I believe most atheists do not act as you are describing (holding the sign that says you are wrong).. ?Rather, this is the type of atheist that gets all the media coverage (the media hats atheists too, and they always choose the most disturbing atheists to use as an example to paint the whole group in a negative light).. ?I know many atheists who feel as you, and they generally gravitate to secular humanism (there was a big argument at AFS about 10 years ago over this very subject; and they split into AFS and HGA).. ??
