Welcome to Metro Atlanta Poz Prime Time, a social group that promotes fellowship and friendships between Atlanta’s HIV poz gay men and "poz friendly" men who want to meet other mature older HIV poz gay men living within or near the greater Atlanta, Athens & Gainesville regions.
The group’s primary focus is on socialization for men 50 and older who enjoy meeting and being around men within our age range. Anyone over the age of 21 who enjoys the camaraderie and companionship of being around older poz gay men is welcome to join, however, this is not a group for young guys who are looking for older men or vice versa - nothing against that but our group’s primary focus is for those of us 50 and older who enjoy meeting and being around men within our age range.
The aim is to offer opportunities for older HIV poz gay men who are affected by HIV, or have been recently diagnosed or are a long term survivor to meet for socializing, friendship, camaraderie, peer support or whatever. This is also a call out to the HIV positive long term survivors who are alive but feel forgotten unwanted and discarded, and who are struggling with loss of career, finances, love, health, living in poverty, have succumbed to drug abuse to numb both the physical and psychic pain, are living isolated lives in both urban and rural areas and feel challenged daily in getting their basic needs met.
We will have two recurring Meet & Eat gatherings every month - one Saturday meet up within/near the 285 perimeter and one Sunday get together within the Norcross/Roswell area. As the group grows we'll plan and schedule other social activities.
This Meetup group also has a Discussion & Message Board area that members can use for sharing information about resources, peer support or to reach out to each other just to meet for coffee, a drink, to go to a movie or shopping, to take a walk and talk, and for roommate or other personal connections.
Aging and HIV are the new face of HIV in America; older gay men represent a growing share of the HIV population. The statistics are astounding—nearly half the gay men living with HIV are age 50 and older. In some cities, more than half of HIV positive gay men are already this age and older and by 2020 the number of gay men living over the age of 60 living with HIV infection will be 70%.
We are living longer than we expected — a reality none of us imagined much less planned for. AIDS took many friends from this group over the last 3 1/2 decades, leaving a limited social horizon. For many older HIV poz gay men, family connections are either few or nonexistent and for those who have lost or not found a spouse and are living alone, the loneliness is compounded.
Isolation is one of the least talked about side effects of living with HIV. Whatever the reason, it is important that older HIV poz men be able to meet each other and break out of that isolation. And within the poz gay male scene, we sometimes feel like we are invisible and very often treated as if we don’t even exist.
But we know the truth. We do exist, life doesn’t end at 50 and 60, it is just getting started and we have much to offer each other.
I know you're out there. If you live in or near the greater metro Atlanta region and need company, you are not alone. Get out of the dark. You don't have to be alone.
There are no membership dues or fees to join. Everyone who signs up for this group should post a recent G rated photo of themselves (clearly showing face) and their real name so we're able to get to know each other. All signups are screened for approval.
This is NOT a group for dating and casual hookups, but hey, if you get lucky in the process... great! There are plenty of dating websites out there for you to join if hooking up for sex is your sole intent. The primary focus here is socialization for everyone – both singles and couples – who sincerely would like to make new friends, need emotional support and enrich their lives. I hope that this group serves as a meaningful alternative to the internet and bars.
