  • Partner meetup: Java Talks, Two by Java Meetup Sydney

    Atlassian (Level 29)

NOTE: This meetup is in partnership with Java Talks | Java Meetup Sydney. RSVP on this page or here (either works!): https://www.meetup.com/Java-Meetup-Sydney/events/253595057/ Hi all, We're excited to announce our second Meetup of 2018 which will be hosted by Atlassian on Thursday 30th August. Talk 1 - Real world Java profiling in production CPU profiling is a key tool in understanding bottlenecks that affect application performance and scalability. However profiling Java applications can sometimes be a challenging process, with profilers often introducing high overhead onto the running application. This talk will go through the journey of the Jira Cloud Performance team, as we developed our capability to run accurate profiling tools on our production systems in order to generate insights and drive substantial performance improvements. Biography - Jonathon Geeves Jonathon was the tech lead of the Jira Cloud performance team during the migration of the Jira Cloud application from Atlassian's datacentres to AWS. He is passionate about web application performance, and a big advocate of production focussed performance tooling. Talk 2 - Move fast to not break things Many people believe the motto "Move fast and break things" highlights an inevitable tradeoff between development speed and reliability of the software being developed. This talk will explain how with continuous integration and continuous delivery practices it is possible to have both, and increased development speed brings higher reliability and vice versa. Biography - Uri Baghin, Software Engineer on Developer Efficiency @ Canva, previously Developer Infrastructure @ Facebook. Interests build automation, test automation, developer workflow. RSVP now, doors open for 5.45pm with the first talk kicking off at 6.30pm.

  • Backend engineering night: Building for performance and scale

    Atlassian (Level 29)

As products and companies grow, the way we build those things has to change. Shortcuts that worked before won't, processes that were simple at first quickly become more complex, and sometimes, architectures simply don't scale. These are good problems to have, but how can we solve them? Atlassian has been through this growth first hand, and we have lessons to share from the front lines of building products for performance and scale. Above all, what else to expect?
