Let's do the Tongariro Crossing!

Hey guys,

You've probably heard of the Tongariro Crossing. It's probably New Zealand's greatest walk, and an absolute must-do if you're able and fit. For most people, this walk takes about 8-hours, but it is not too strenuous, and the track is good-quality. However, to do it in a day trip from Auckland is quite challenging, as it is a 4.5 hour drive from Auckland.

So here's the plan:

Pickup from 148 Quay St at 6am sharp.
Arrive at Mangatepopo Car Park at 11am.
Finish the walk at 7pm.
I will plan to race ahead of the group near the end of the trail, and catch one of the taxis that will take me back to the Mangatepopo Car Park. Then I will drive my van back to the end of the trail to pick you guys up.
We should arrive back in Auckland around midnight.

This is a very challenging hike so make sure you are well prepared! You will be absolutely knackered the next day, so this is why we'll do it on the Saturday.

This is an expensive trip for me and my gas-guzzling van, so price is $80 each per seat. I have 8 spare seats in my van.

We will leave at 6am sharp from 148 Quay St. Give me a text on[masked] if you think you might be late! The trip is also weather-dependent. I will let you know by the day before of cancellation due to poor weather.

I hope to see you guys there!

I would also pack at least 3 litres of water, fresh fruit, pain killers (very important!), and cotton balls or plasters in case your feet get blisters. It's a long walk!

Weather is looking good for tomorrow! Please use google to figure out what you need for tomorrrow. Here's a link from DoC: http://www.doc.govt.nz/parks-and-recreation/places-to-go/central-north-island/places/tongariro-national-park/things-to-do/tracks/tongariro-alpine-crossing/what-to-take/

Hey Micheal :) do you have any recommendations about what we should wear and take in our day pack for this hike? Do we need proper hiking gear e.g. hiking boots? Also would it be possible to be picked up at Greenlane?

Pickup from green lane is possible as I am near there. You should google what you need for the crossing. I'll provide a link shortly

Hey guys, looks like I'll have to postpone this to next Saturday due to strong winds forecast at Tongariro tomorrow (95kmh!) :-(

Any confirmation for tomorrow? I need to pop out on my lunch break to get a few bits and pieces if we're going ahead. Thank you :-)

Hey Michael does that $80 include the walk price too? Not sure how it works... Cheers!

Just out of curiosity... Does your van really need $640 worth of gas to get to and from tongariro? I'm sorry but when you said $80 includes everything I was sure it had include something other than just gas as $80 per person for gas($640) seems a little far fetched?

I operate a tour business for profit. So after gas and tax, I get something back to compensate my time to help pay for rent and food and stuff. I also must consider that a lot of times people simply don't show up. If you're not comfortable with this, I'm not forcing you to come. I hope you can understand

Would you be able to pick me up around Mt Roskill (very close to airport)? I don't think there is bus to CBD at 6am for me.
