[TOUR] MTB NEPAL - Mustang Province Oct 2017 - CONFIRMED

  • to

  • This location is shown only to members

  • IMPORTANT UPDATE - TRIPPED CONFIRMED

Great news - We have reached the minimum number of committed people to make this trip a complete reality - so this is now a confirmed trip (no longer just proposed)

In addition we have a significant number of definite maybes looking to boost our overall numbers when it comes to crunch time early next year to make a final decision.

If you're interested to join us on this trip (even if you are maybe) then please put yourself on the RSVP and I will contact you to discuss the next steps.

    *********

ONCE IN A LIFETIME ADVENTURE AWAITS

An epic package deal for a MTB/Tourist trip heading to NEPAL in October 2017 (30th Sept-24thOct 2017) to ride the Mustang Province (around the Annapurna Circuit/Pokhara area), explore the Kathmandu Valley, and the Chitwan National Park area over a 22 day tour.

CLICK HERE TO SEE THE ITINERARY AND GUIDELINE COSTS

For those contemplating joining us note we are only requiring your expressions of intent at this early stage for planning purposes - payments and final commitment won't be expected till early-mid 2017 which gives you plenty of time to to start saving.

Heres a sample of what we could be riding to whet your appetite

    https://vimeo.com/83867687

CORE FITNESS will be the biggest ingredient as we will be riding every day to some degree (there are some non riding days too) so you will want to put some millage training in over the next 12+months.  While a good amount of the tour will be downhill orientated there will still be certain sections with an ascent requirement on some days, and we will be at altitude which makes effort harder (requiring you to pace yourself)

    TRAIL CLASSIFICATION:
The tour operator allocates 1 experienced tour guide to every 4-5 riders and considering we currently have the numbers to split the group up into 2-3 subgroups already (maybe more if our numbers grow further) that means we are able to designate different trail grades to different sub groups each day.

This allows us to offer a variety of trail/skill level options on the tour to suit your comfort level - from easy to intermediate right through to advanced+ (so grades 2,3, & 4+).   Basically the different sub groups will ride different routes from A-B each day and meet up for lunch and dinners along the way.

    BIKES:

    • If you are going to take your own bike over (on the airlines as sports equipment - defined as checked in luggage), then the trails will best suit the following bike types -

    » All Mountain/Trial/Enduro
    » or Freeride bikes.

e.g. full suspension bikes providing more fork travel i.e. [masked]mm, and slacker frame angles (Cross Country bikes would not be suitable for this terrain it seems). You could choose to take a dedicated Downhill bike but considering the ascending sections involved will be quite demanding I'd say you'd end up pushing a lot.

    • HIRE BIKES:  I've arranged the alternative of renting bikes from the tour operator as it may be more stress free, flexible and efficient. Please refer to the Full Itinerary Document for details on that cost/spec.

    • TRIP COSTS: Based on the itinerary and requirements for accomodation and transport etc you should work on $5500-$6000pp for 22 days as a loose indicator - you can see the budgeted cost breakdowns in the Full Itinerary Document

    • PREPARATION: You've got 18months to save up and get the time off, and to work on your fitness if need be !

    • INSURANCE: We will need to obtain special travel insurance targeted to cover the Alpine MTB activity overseas - this is not negotiable.... everyone will have to get this as most standard travel insurance policies will not cover you properly.

    • COMMITMENT:
This does not mean you need to have money right now!!
We already have our fully committed core number of people which has secured this trip but we are looking to have the remaining interested parties indicate their intent (whether it be a definite maybe or just a maybe) so we can gauge potential final numbers. Final monetary commitment will be deferred till early 2017 when deposit requirements will force you to decide either way.

Ideally would be looking to secure/pay for flights and other important packages (deposits etc) within the 1st quarter of 2017 (maybe around feb/mar) so we can get the benefit of significant cost savings (e.g. the difference between paying $[masked] more for flights is based on how early you grab them).

So after reading all the above information, you'll pretty much know if you are keen or not.... if you are, then RSVP and start working towards making it a reality if you can.

Hope we have hard core adventurers in our midst :)

    Rick

    ------------------

New and not sure if you should RSVP? - if anyone is wondering what sort of activities we get up to on these away trips, or just how much fun and socially orientated they truly become, or how diverse the ages, genders, skill and fitness levels are, then you should check out the photo gallery from our last trip to Hawkes Bay.  Everyone is welcome, and we'd be happy to have you along.

PS. heres some more videos to convince you that you should say yes to Nepal....

I need a pair of those as well. Or rather a new set of knees. Not sure how the old knees will stand up to multiple days of abuse.

  • Sarah

Hi there - I have three of us who are keen. What do we need to do to secure a space?

    June 29

    • Intrigue

Hi Sarah, great to hear. If you can direct message me with your 3 names plus individual email addresses I can invite you to our planning/discussion group so you can get up to speed on where we are at currently & keep informed as we progress. DM me for starters. Rick

  • livenow

Nice work Ric, glad you finally found your true vocation. Y/N ... not sure. Love to come. Pulled between riding rockies or some where crazy like Napal onto another . The costs are super high? :( and for that region . Riding Europe France for 21 days for me is way cheaper over 1/2

    June 21

    • Intrigue

Not really...the costs are all inclusive on the tour days Shane - so we don't have to arrange anything... covers all transport, sherpers, accomo, food, guides etc etc so that all we worry about when riding is carry our small day bag bladders and keeping the big smiles on our faces lol... plus we'll be riding trails that most don't even get to see (that's priceless). If you do decide to come let me know

Hi Rick, going to have to pull the plug, but keen to hear how it goes. Mike

    • Mike

Unfortunately I won't be going at all, but may look at going another time, so keen to find out how it goes

      June 12

    • Intrigue

No prob. Probably won't go to Nepal again tho Mike - it's one of those once in a lifetime things... I don't run it as a tour business lol so will have another destination in my sights for future trips.

  • Caroline D.

    Hi Rick
I'm finishing work at the cloud and hope to be on the 3 pm ferry but if I don't make it will be on the 3.30 back to Devonport and will drive over so could be a bit late.

Re: Transport Needed to Nepal Mtg on Sunday from Western Springs

    Hi group,

I recently joined and have ridden a couple of times with some of you at Riverhead. I would like to come along on Sunday to find out more about the Nepal trip but am not able to drive myself there as I'm recovering from some broken bones. I'm at Western Springs if anyone is going past and has room.

    Cheers, Mark

    June 10

    • Anita F.

Hi Mark, I'll be going past that way, so can pick you up on way past.

      1 · June 10

    • Mark

Thanks Anita. I'll message you my address.

      June 10

  • Intrigue

Can anyone help Mark with transport from western springs to west Harbour on Sunday - see his comment below. If you can please contact him ASAP. Thanks

    June 10

  • Intrigue

I've only had 3 people contact me to say they won't be able to join us on Sunday so I assume that we will see the rest of you. As I mentioned earlier, if you did not receive the group email yesterday which contained all the location and time details etc... then you need to message me direct with your email address so I can email it straight to you rather than via meetup. Roll on sunday :)

    1 · June 9

  • Intrigue

Hi everyone, I've just sent out a group email to all the RSVP's giving the relevant info regarding the meeting on sunday - e.g. location, times, etc etc. So if you don't receive that email please let me know ASAP.

    • Dan S.

Hi Rick, in reality I don't think I'll make this trip, being 2nd year of my new business! I've been to Nepal before though for a month so hit me up for any questions and tips if you like. Cheers, Dan

      June 9

    • Intrigue

That's a shame Dan, let me know if you change your mind closer to the time and thanks for the offer

      June 9

  • Intrigue

RESPONSE NEEDED PLEASE - Hey everyone, I thinking we should probably have a group powwow either on the 10th or 11th of June. I should have enough back ground info to go over with you by then and we can to a group brainstorm session to try identify other tourist orientated things we might want to do in and around the core cycle tour. Can people let me know if they'd rather to an afternoon thing or and evening get together. Plus indicate which of the 2 dates is preferred. Was planning on just having everyone around to our place in West Harbour to chat over a few drinks (maybe 1hr), but if people would prefer to step it up to a potluck BBQ (weather permitting) we can explore that option too. Please let me know - cheers Rick

  • Gary P

Hey Rick . I'll have to read some of your notes, no doubt you'll have a few?.... As I'm away 11th-13th June.

    1 · May 19

    • Intrigue

Had to be one lol. Yep we'll should have an updated outline after the powwow I'd say - still be helicopter level tho. You'll miss the group brainstorm re what other tourist stuff we can add to the itinerary around the mustang tour based on peoples interests etc - but you're a bit of a cruiser so will probably be happy with what ever we all come up with. There will be more powwows as we progress which you can get to.

      May 19

  • Intrigue

Ok it seems like the general consensus is leaning towards a late Sunday afternoon - so I think we may look at something between 4-6pm on Sunday 12th June - so pencil that in for now and I will confirm and provide location details in the week leading up... only had one person saying they'd like a BBQ party (lol) so may just keep it simple for the fist meeting and ask that people bring what they want to drink and I'll put some snack/nibbles around to munch on. We can get more social as we get into more in-depth planning session at a later date.

    1 · May 19

    • Intrigue

Also very impressed to see that Steph has already secured her time off for the trip (see photo gallery) - now that's the sort of commitment that we like to see... jump in with both feet. Awesome

  • Vicki Q.

Those downhills are similar to the ones I've done in Queenstown... I think a trip down south might be in order for some practice before we go :-)

    May 14

    • Intrigue

Now there's an idea - probably cost us the same as the return flights to Nepal no doubt (damn expensive mainland lol) but worth looking into. Pull some ideas together about itinerary, possible places to stay, costs etc and maybe some potential dates and we can discuss it when I call the Nepal powwow in a few weeks time

  • Gary P

Crash landing an Antonov sounds like a whole lot of fun Rick! The rest.... looks rather inviting.

    1 · May 14

    • Intrigue

Sweet. Will probably call group powwow late May or early June to go over stuff I manage to pull together in the next few weeks. Going to be something to remember for sure if we pull it off Gary

What level of Biker is it aimed at ? Super down hill types or mere mortals who love exploring different cultures by bike ?

    May 11

    • Caroline D.

      Great
      Thanks for your reply.
Does this count as RSVP ?

      May 11

    • Intrigue

FYI - I've just added some additional detail bout the trail grades in the main description which will be of interest to you Caroline

      May 12

  • Intrigue

I've added some new info into the main description regarding bikes, trail grade, expected distances, fitness needed and insurance etc so you may wish to re-read at some point.

    May 12

  • Intrigue

Distances seem to vary a bit depending on operators, routes used & ascent/decent quotient - one I'm liking the look of has days ranging from 15km-60kms (obviously the later is mostly downhill flowing so requires less energy to cover distance) but most days seem to average between 25k-45km depending on variables. Got to remember those distances are spread out over a whole day, broken up with sightseeing rest stops & lunch breaks etc rather than one intensive session going hard out. So I'd say if you can maintain a 7-8ph average over challenging terrain during a 6-8 hr touring day then you'd be able to handle it easily. Btw I'm pretty sure most trails are classified as Intermediate (grade 3) with some areas getting slightly towards Advanced (grade 4) so if you can ride the blue & dark blue trails & woodhill without totally freaking out you should be fine. However there could possibly be sections that are rated as Black Diamond (grade 5) due to some sections dropping away on trail edges requiring mental fortitu

Jesus Rick! Had to look twice at the location! Don't think the mighty Mazda will get that far! Do we charter a Boeing 747?

      2 · May 12

    • Intrigue

lol Dave.... we swim :) nah flying of course... maybe we could book a Russian Antonov transport plan and put the Mazda in the back. so we can drive those nepalese back country roads.

Sounds like a great idea. Definitely interested in more details. Any idea of rough daily distance?

    May 11

    • Intrigue

Maybe the odd 20?? But as I say we are talking down hill gradient since we fly up to Jonsom (highest point) - will know more once I short list some operators itineraries
