[TOUR] Moerangi MTB Trail -Whirinaki Forest W/E 2 -4 Dec 2016

  • 3 days ago · 3:30 PM

Moerangi trail is a (point to point) 35km trail in Whirinaki forest.  The ride is suited to confident riders There are some narrow ridges that we will be riding along and some slips but am hoping DOC will get in there and fix a few of them before we ride there in a few weeks. Remember this is a back country ride so please bring all weather gear on the ride  and enough food for 6hrs of riding.

We will stay in Taupo on Friday and Saturday night.

Friday 2nd December 2016 -Travel to Taupo - own dinner

Saturday 3rd December

Shuttle to the start of the trail early morning  (2hr shuttle) and then we will be  picked up at the end of the trail (after an awesome downhill) (2 hrs back to Taupo). It will be a long day as the ride may take anywhere from 5-6 hrs.

Sunday 4th December
We can ride the W2K trail(return) if we are up to it or a cruisy ride around the craters of the moon before heading back to Auckland on Sunday afternoon.

more info re the trail -

The Moerangi track is a recipe for a good adventure, it is an epic ride that is one of the best in the North Island.  This 35km point to point ride is in the middle of nowhere set among huge beech trees in the amazing Whirinaki Forest. It is best ridden from east to west.

There are three huts to visit along the way, including a historic hut built with native timber slabs. It is a challenging Grade 4-5 mountain bike track, with no road access or mobile reception along trail. There is over 1000m of cumulative climbing during the course of the ride, with largest being in the second half of the ride, but there is reward, the downhill from Moerangi saddle is fantastic! Because the track is benched on steep hill sides, in many places the track is exposed to large cliffs and banks that drop into the river below. Many of these exposed places also have poor traction making for further increased risk. Towards the end of the ride, there is currently some very rutted descents.

Here is a tentative itinerary for Saturday -

7:10 Shuttle arrival at accommodation for loading

7:30 Shuttle departure

9:30 Shuttle arrival at Ohaku Road ford (start of ride)

10:00 Commence the 37km ride to River Road End

4:00 Shuttle departure

6:00 Shuttle arrival at Taupo accommodation

I have booked accommodation so we will be staying at Lennox house which is based right in town.

Hi Vicki, i found some information about the trail:
    http://www.ridenz.co/trails/moerangi-track/
They're calling it a Grade 3, not 5. Is the lower grading out of date?

    1 · July 13

    • Vicki Q.

Yes it is. It use to be grade 3 but there has been some major slips this year so it now not an easy trail because of this. The shuttle driver rides the trail often as he guides as well and he agrees that the trail is a lot harder. Doc have been working slowly to fix parts of the trail. The shuttle driver is going to keep me updated on the trail over the next few months.

      July 13

    • Vicki Q.

The trail is now graded from 4 to 5.

  • Malcolm

So when? Nov date in header or Dec date? Nov can do. (I see Taupo race is weekend in between the current two dates).

    July 13

    • Vicki Q.

sorry Malcolm ..its definitely first weekend in December ..the shuttle guy double booked so i had to change it ..... all updated now

      July 13

  • Andy

Hi Vicki, this the weekend of the round Taupo cycle challenge, so accommodation may be tricky unless you have something already lined up.
    I'm definitely interested though

    July 13

    • Vicki Q.

Thanks Andy.i will change the date to the weekend before.
